Type 2 Insurance

I am type 2 diabetic, diagnosed about 12 years ago. Although being well controlled ( without any drugs except for slightly underactive thyroid)I did go on the Michael Mosley/Roy Taylor diet last February and lost 15Kg..

This resulted in my HBA1c has reduced to under 30. I have used the follow up methods from the book and maintained this for almost a year now. My GP says that if he did not have any medical records and tested for type 2, he would not diagnose me as diabetic.

Although I realise that diabetes cannot be reversed, how should this affect travel insurance? I am, of course fully honest with my disclosure, but find that my premium is increased as a result. This is with companies that specialise in pre-existing conditions.

Does anyone know if these companies would accept further evidence to show the full extent of my condition. The standard forms do not distinguish between levels of diabetes. It's rather galling to pay more than a non-diabetic with worse blood sugar levels than mine.

Hi @Dave_R I have travel cover as part of a bank account, and I do not pay any extra for travel cover, and that is worldwide. If you want further info send me a PM

You have to be really careful with insurance. For instance, if you get a burglar alarm and ask for reduced insurance, what happens if you forget to set it? Similarly, if you claim not to be diabetic, but on holiday inadvertently eat something that badly affects your blood sugar, what will be your position then?
I don't think you can claim to be cured until you can eat a broad range of "normal" food without affect.

Me too, but they still ask you to declare illnesses. Of course, they won't say anything until you claim and they find out you haven't declared an illness. My (included) bank travel insurance is still good, but it is heavily loaded because of diabetes, depression, cancer etc etc.

@BrianTheElder my ailments are declared and acknowledged in writing. So long as I am not on any 'hypo inducing' medication there are no special terms imposed by underwriting, nor an additional premium or excess
