Hello
Last week we were discussing the situation with Diabetes and insurance and the DVLA in my DAFNE course.
It was stated that your insurer could not prejuduice against you for having this condition nor could they put your premiums up.
is this everyones experience?

Regards
Paul

when i was found to have diabetis in 2001 i informed dvla and was told i could still drive my car . i also phonedmy insurance company and they said they did not need to know as long as dvla allowed me to drive . i dont know if thats the case with all insurance companies .

i have told DVLA as required. i have also told my insurance company exactly how i treat it. i am not giving them the chance to back out of a claim just because i didnt inform them when they said i didnt need to .

Hi, I seem to have so many questions to ask and feel that I am a complete novice.

I had renewed my car insurance a few weeks before I was diagnosed with type 1. I rang them and asked if there would be any problem in continuing to drive. (Not heard anything yet from DVLA). They said no, provided that it is under control. What that is supposed to mean is anybody's guess. They said that if it is not under control I must report the matter.

What is defined as under control as they seem to be passing the buck?

Also I asked them if it would affect next years premium. They said no, but the underwriters would normally 'load' my excess.

They have various things to consider, like whether you have a lot of hypos that require help from someone else, whether you have any hypo unawareness, and if you have any problems with your eyes. They'll send you some forms to fill in and ask you for details of all your doctors, who they will contact for some sort of assessment. Then they decide whether you get a licence or not. It will have to be reviewed every 3 years.

If you haven't heard back, contact them again. As far as I can tell, government departments never resolve anything unless you keep on at them constantly, and then they only sort it out to make you go away! (time for my next a***y letter to hmrc... Not resentful at all... :-) )
