Good evening. I have been a diabetic for about 19 years and my glucose level control has been up and down. I want to start to tighten my control as I am getting older so I have started using the gym and doing some jogging outside. I have also drastically reduced my intake of carbs and tring to eat a lot of veg and fish with very little carbs or no carbs at all. I have realised that my sugar level has been dropping intemetently during the day and sometime i have to take in something to increase my sugar level. I take 30 units of lantus before bed which is my background insulin. Do I have to reduce this at night which might be the cause?

Hei, welcome to the forums.
Don’t think we are allowed to offer ‘medical’ advice.. and I think changing your basal insulin would come under that. But if you have gone from sofa surfing to gym bunny, then yes you are probably going to need less insulin. When I noticed my waking blood sugar levels rising I saw the diabetic nurse and asked if I should increase my basal insulin.. and she said words to the effect that it was my diabetes…..my decision….
Am more of a sofa surfer than any kind of gym bunny, but I have been trying to take a daily walk, on the days when I don’t manage to get out, or rather the following day.. or days… my blood sugar levels go up…
and if you have reduced your carb in take as well… no need for so much insulin?
my waking blood sugars rose last summer, turned out to be shingles causing a rise in temperature… and therefore raised BS, but I was advised in that case to increase my basal insulin by 2 doses, till the waking level was between x and y.
Remember that some basal insulins take a few days to act completely. I use Tresiba and I know not to assess any changes in dose level for at least 3 days after the change.
well done btw for taking yourself in hand…
best wishes, from a 71 year old, diagnosed 3 years ago who is up late, waiting for a late evening dose of insulin to wear off, taken to accompany a dish of chips!

I had similar issues years ago when I started dancing, I only take 20 units of Lantus at night and before I go and do any exercises I will reduce my fast acting insulin by two or three units before my meal, this will raise your glucose slightly but they will go down and I find they stay more in control, you need more carbs as your body will be using up everything as you exercise I can see that what you are eating has very little carb value.
