Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

Hi all,

My name is Mon. I was diagnosed with DM about a year ago after experiencing severe symptoms of hyperglycaemia. I’m happy to report that I’m doing much better now but still have lots to learn and change.

Here is my attempt at answering some of the suggested questions:

I am into swimming, free diving, and rowing. Great admirer of martial arts and horse riding.

Sometimes.

No.

- What is your favourite flag?

- Ever gone camping?
Once and I loved it! I would love to do that again.

- Ever been in love?
Yes, what a feeling! It can elevate you to heights that you never thought you could reach, yet it can also crush your heart to bits if you’re not careful.

No need, I am permanently tanned.

- Which countries have you visited?
Not many physically, but quite a few through people and books.

Barcelona. A lively city that can make you feel right at home from the 1st day you step a foot in it.

No, but I seek to be knowledge-wealthy one day.

- Do you work? If so, as what?
Yes, but I am also a university student. I work in a hospital and study medicine.

I guess how I didn’t take care of my body growing up, but I’ve come a long way since and I intend to learn from my mistakes and work hard to reverse as much of the damage that was caused as possible.

- What do you like most about yourself? I'm always honest, caring, affectionate, helpful, and happy for others.
- What do you like least about yourself? I don't care about myself very well, I have anxiety/ depression and recently my doc said I had bipolar. I'm also addicted to chocolate/ biscuits.

I'm Philip, retired and diagnosed Type 2 over 10 years ago. TBH I forget quite when - I just take the tablets and try to get on with it ...

I am 65 years old and have type 2 diabetes. I was diagnosed about 15 years ago and have a up down relationship with it. I was quite poorly last summer with Covid pneumonia and spent 5 and a half weeks in hospital. Since then I have been trying to follow a low carbon diet with mixed success. I would like to use the forum to support my journey.

My name is Susan. I live in the UK and was diagnosed as pre-diabetic seven years ago when in my mid-fifties. I managed to reduce my HbA1c and now maintain it at a reasonable level via a Low Carb Healthy Fat diet. I'm also a member of my local U3A (University of the Third Age) where I run a lifestyle group to support others who are keen to see whether the Low Carb approach may help them tackle metabolic and other health conditions. At our most recent session which focussed on Alzheimer's disease (AKA type 3 diabetes), we looked at information from the NHS and Alzheimer's Society in the context of more hopeful research by US nutritionist Amy Berger.

I go by the name Ram. I am a retired Professor in Biochemistry. I have been a Type II Diabetic for the last 25 years. My A1C has been 5.7 to 6.2. For the last three years, I have been at 5.7. I largely manage with diet and exercise. I used to be on Metformin for a long time. My main problem has been hypoglycemia. I have been waiting for CGM. With the Medicare system we have in the US, it was not allowed for Type II diabetic. However, in April 2023 they approved the use for Type II patients upon justification. So I started on Dexcom G7 two months ago. It is very accurate (compared to finger prick) and I rarely have to calibrate. I prefer to use the receiver rather than the phone as it is small and compact. So for I have had great experience. The DexCom support system is fantastic at least in the US. The CGM has prevented me from keeling over few times.
I am trying intermittent fasting and kept friendly diet.
I used to eat lots of fruits, but alas after the CGM I discovered that many of them can spike my sugar despite all the goodness in them. So, I have sadly drastically reduced my fruits intake.
I do lot of walking (8-9 miles a day), workout in the gym for a hr. I am a hindu vegetarian, which has its problems with carbs and protein. I supplement with dairy, eggs, nuts and beans.
I do lot of traveling and there are confusing information on the air port X -Ray machines. I have had no problems with whole body scan as well as the hand baggage screens in the US airports.
 
 
Hi I’m Nicky. newby here, not actually been diagnosed officially, high levels of 79 on first blood test, which i beleive is 9ish on the old readings ..a bit of a shock as I only went in for a UTI urine test been left now for 2 months to change diet and activity level until the next blood test to confirm, I feel I have been just thrown into the lions den with no information of what I should be doing .. any help will be gratefully received, I am trying to cut my carbs and make better healthy choices but I am struggling with low carb !!!! so really dont know what I am doing … help !!!

Hello I’m Holly!
I am a confusing 37 year old ?type 2? diabetic who has been on insulin since Jan 2023 following an admission to ICU with Euglycaemic DKA (caused by the SGLT2 drug dapagliflozin). I’m currently under the care of a hospital diabetes team because I’m a bit of a weird case. I currently have a Libre 2 sensor connected to the diabetes team so they can see what my BG is doing (it’s a bit Big Brother but hopefully it’ll help them decide what treatment route to take). All I need now is someone to follow me around and slap food out of my hands and I’ll be on my way into remission. Joking. (Sorry it’s how I cope!)

Definitely the arms so I could scratch my back. Also I would use second set of arms to stop first set of arms from feeding me carbs.

Greetings folks. I am Stephen Akar, 45, from Nigeria but currently live in Japan. I am an infectious disease epidemiologist. My maternal Great Grandma and Grandma died of Type 2 diabetes. I have also lost two maternal uncles to diabetes and my mom is currently battling with it. I got diagnosed as pre-diabetic in 2021 and I have been seeing a specialist since then and made several lifestyle changes. I look forward to learning from folks in the great forum.
