hi i'm victoria.i am 39 yrs old and live in rayleigh essex. i am a full time mum of 5. my eldest being 20 and youngest 4. i have been married for 3 yrs, although we were married before. i am a type 1 diabetic and have been since 1990. i was 17 and didn't take the news too well. i rebelled very badly, and never looked after myself. it has only been in the last few years that i have taken notice of my condition, but i really don't know how to look after myself properly. i have refused to see my consultant at the hospital, as he is a jumped up ***********, who had nothing helpful to say apart from tell me off for smoking and that i won't see my now11 yr old grow up. got a very swift f*** o** followed by a very needy fag!!! (helpful). i am very uncontrolled,no matter what i eat or inject. anyway, i am in the process of continuing to enjoy my beautful children, and loving husband, and doing everything i can to have a happy life with everybody.

Hi All, I am Billy Adam, 60 yrs old and live in Filey, North Yorkshire. Married for 37 yrs, have a son and a daughter, both adults and living their own lives.
I work in the oil and gas industry in Canada and was diagnosed with diabetes during my anual medical in April this year where my blood sugar was 23. With this I could not go offshore and had to take sick time to get my sugars down. I am now back at work although I have some way to go yet, trying to stay below 7.
A life changing condition that I will have to deal with on a daily basis now, at least I am only on 2 metformin each day.

I was diagnosed in 1998 after having gestational diabetes (twice) but it was 2000 before they discovered I was T1. I hate it with a passion and very often bury my head in the sand. I try to live by the 80/20 % rule - relatively good 80% of the time and ****** it all 20%. I'm not dead yet so hopefully I'm not doing too much damage. The fact that my job is as a bus driver was an immediate concern. I have obviously been signed off sick till the DVLA do what needs done. Hopefully my driving licence will not be taken away and I will be able to return to work. I work for one of the largest UK bus operators and unsympathetic is one of the milder terms I will use to describe them. At higher management levels at any rate.

Stuff them. In true Trade Union Rep style, I'll fight them all the way.

Strange thing all this time on my hands. Been working since I was 18 so this is a total culture shock. Still plenty to keep me busy. My 2 aquariums do that. And the cat too.

Anyway thats a breif bit about me. Be good to hear from anyone. I don't know any other diabetics so be great to chat. Also any other proffessional drivers pleae share your experiences re licence, employer etc.

Hi Gary

I was diagnosed about 15 years ago and I was a Field Sales Rep - I only stopped doing that about 2 years ago . My licence has to be renewed every 3 years but as long as you get early warning signs of a hypo, and obviously check your levels before you drive and don't have hypos at the wheel, you will be ok and they won't take it away. I have to go through the whole rigmarole every 3 years but I don't have to have a medical or anything - its just filling in paperwork, sending it back, them checking with your doctor etc. Honestly its painless And between you and me I'm the worst diabetic there is - I LOVE chocolate, bread, cakes, biscuits, anything that I'm not supposed to have tbh, it got worse after I was diagnosed I suppose it was cos I wasn't supposed to eat it and I hate anyone telling me what I should and should't' do.

You'll be fine - if they still let ME drive you'll breeze through it :thumbup:

whilst trying hard to maintain stable blood sugars as you all know it is not easy. I had laser treatment on my eyes about 15 years ago which was a great success and I maintain good eye sight. Over the last 7 years I have suffered with kidney issues but due to the good care of my specialist in the UK and now Dubai I have managed to prolong the inevitable. Unfortunately things slowly got worse and last December started on dialysis, which is not really recommended.
I have a donor for a transplant but am having major issues with my insurance company. Time will now tell and I am looking forward to my transplant and getting back to normal.
