Introduction and advice

Hi ... I'm Martin and was diagnosed from a blood test on Friday. I have immediately changed my diet going low carb ...

But I know very little else ..... Doctor hadn't spoken to me and diabetic nurse is a month behind

Any advice for a newbie??
 
Hi and welcome. I assume your diagnosis was T2 rather than T1 - GPs usually guess it. Going low-carb is the first priority. Do buy yourself a glucose meter so you can monitor your blood sugar. You should be given (or had) an HBA1C blood test within 3 months of diagnosis. If you are slim and/or have lost weight unexpectedly and have high blood sugar then T1 becomes possible and there are two tests for that. The fairly standard first level medication for T2 is Metformin tablets which help BS a bit. It's a very safe drug which many of us take.

Hi there, it sounds like you have pretty much advised yourself on the main issue! Would you mind telling us your 'new' typical days eating as it really helps people to advise on anything that might catch you out. x

My day today is a 4 egg omlette with 77g cheese ( low fat)

100g of iceberg lettuce with 77g of tomato and a large avacoado

Will have a chicken thigh as snack

Then about 200g of stir-fry veg with 2 salmon fillets and soy sauce for dinner

As long as you are sticking with the lower carb veg that sounds really good.
But as others suggest, getting a meter really helps with low carb. We all react differently to foods so eg. I was surprised to find I could have raspberries in moderation but the same carb count of strawberries spiked me. Having a meter will also allow you to experiment with other foods if you get bored.

Well it certainly sounds like you're on the right track. You may want to check the carbs in the low fat cheese- often the low fat versions of food have more carbs.

Getting a meter is your next step- as @TriciaWs says we all react differently so you may find that the meter suggests some changes.
