Has anyone been prescribed Invokana? My GP has prescribed it for me and I'm slightly nervous about side effects. Any advice would be appreciated thank you.

Hi Dipsy and welcome to the forum.

Whenever I am prescribed something new I go home and look up the name of the drug on this website:
http://www.drugs.com/invokana.html

Here you will see info about side effects, interactions and other important things you need to know. You can ask your doctor about anything in there that concerns you.

Which side effects in particular are you nervous about? Have you tried any other meds for your diabetes apart from metformin? Do you know what your latest HbA1c or fasting blood glucose result was?

I'm most nervous about the urinary tract infections as I had several over a twelve month period a few years back and still get the occassional one. Also I have read reports that there could be links to kidney stones and heart problems, the benefits just don't seem to counteract the negatives and at the moment I feel quite well my HbA1c is 10

Did the doctor prescribe it in response to your HbA1C result? If so, maybe you could try some dietary adjustments to get that down instead?

I think it was more in response to my weight (BMI 32) as he said i should lose weight on this drug and if I didn't there was no point in taking it. He suggested changes to my diet which I know is not as good as it should be. I am making adjustments to my diet but previously the only way I have brought it down is to virtually cut out carbs which is quite hard

Ok - at least you have an idea why he prescribed it. As Catlady says, I'd look into the possible pros and cons if you're feeling uneasy about taking it. Ultimately, it's your decision. You could also try having a word with your doctor and telling them your concerns to see if they can put your mind at rest or maybe suggest alternatives you'd be happier with.

Yes, cutting out carbs is hard and can be a big lifestyle change. If you want to try that again, there's a low carb section on here where you should be able to get help and support. Maybe you could try a slightly higher amount of carbs to try to find the sweet spot where you lose weight and can fit the diet into your life too.

Good luck and keep us updated as to whether you take the Invokana or not. Your experience may help others wrestling with the same decision :)
