2 weeks ago I started taking iron supplements , mainly Floradix with iron and after runs a 50mg tablet.

My blood works showed I was on the low end of the Iron threshold and my GP recommended I take this.
I was struggling with running and couldn't achieve a sub 5 min per KM to save my life and often couldn't even complete a 7 km run. I felt tired all the time despite some epic sleeping.

Since I've started taking Iron the change has been unbelievable , not just for running but general well being.

However there some strange side effects which I'm not sure how nominal Iron levels can be responsible. My insulin sensitivity has gone through the roof , I don't appear to effected by DP anymore. I put this to the test last night and I ate pizza , 2 x large corneto's , 2 x doughnuts, and chocolate bars galore, bolusing for them all. I woke up at 5.2 mmol ! A few weeks ago I'd wake up high as a kite after that feast, even with correct bolusing.

Another side effect is my weight , it's not going up whatsoever despite eating junk. I'm wondering if the Iron intake has kick started my metabolism.

Any thoughts on this or similar experiences ?

Don't see anything that is beneficial to blood sugar in the contents. If anything I should be seeing a rise in BS as there are carbs in the tonic (11 g)

100 ml (corresponding to approximately 109 g) solution containing as an active ingredient: 703.3 to 773.9 mg of iron (II) gluconate corresponding to 81.75 mg of iron (II) -Ionen.Sonstige ingredients: ascorbic acid, (Ph Eur.) aqueous extract (1: 28.2) of a mixture of hibiscus flowers, bitter fennel, carrot, mercury rhizome, yarrow, angelica root, horsetail, plantain leaves, juniper berries, Chicory root, bitter orange peel (3: 2,3: 2,3: 2,3: 2.3: 1.15: 1.15: 1.15: 1.15: 1: 0.64), extract means water, yeast autolysate, grape juice concentrate red, cherry juice concentrate, pear juice concentrate, blackberry concentrate, black currant

@Seniz welcome to the forum. I see you are asking a question on an old 2017 post. You may or may not get a reply. You are more likely to get replies if you start your own discussion about iron supplements.

Now 2024. Newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic. Did not understand bolusing or DP. Have been reducing sugar and fats in my diet and been quite successful but I new feel I need an iron boost and have bought Floradix iron and vitamin formula. It doesn't say I can' t take it but it says it may reduce the effectiveness of some medications. I have been put on slow process Metformin twice a day but recently I have become quite wobbly in the evening and wondered if my sugar levels have gone too low. I do own a machine but I haven't used it as the doctor said that it was only useful for type 1 so that they can balance their sugars whereas type 2 only have one blood test a year because the blood constituency does not change very much over the year. This is a blood test taken by a nurse.
