Is a sharp peak after eating usual?

Is it normal for your blood sugar to rise very shortly after eating?

When I say shortly, I do not mean 2 hours. I mean much less.

Lately I have been trying to ascertain whether or not I have Celiac Disease, as digestive problems have continued from last year, giving way to some malabsorption issues. This in turn, has led me to check my blood sugar quite a bit.

Usually I am 4.8ish in a morning and 4.9ish before bed. I am 29 years old, eat mainly carbs and sugars and probably a little underweight.

Lately however, later in the day, (usually evening ish), I have checked my levels via my AccuCheck Nano, and after eating things like rice, potatoes, some fruit, it has risen quite sharply, only to drop around 30-40 mins after.

Example; Yesterday I didnt have much other than porridge, rice and veg until around 3/4pm. Then I ate a bowl of rice, tuna, some cauliflower cheese and quite a few candyfloss grapes (so good). I then checked my levels around 20-30 mins after, it was 9.6. 30 minutes later it was 7.5, and 30 mins later it was 5.8. (I know, checking so frequently is a bit hypochondria, but I was experimenting a little).

That initial spike - albeit probably down to the sugary grapes - is that normal?

*Im probably going to eat more protein and less carbs because I feel protein keeps me satiated for longer without the peaking.

Any help appreciated.

I'm afraid that as diabetics we would not even think about eating those foods, so can have no relevant information. Even type ones using insulin tend to eat protein and fat rather than so much carbohydrate.

Yeah I just wasnt sure on the peaking really quite suddenly after eating, I am still learning about phase one insulin secretion etc.

Just when I seen 9.6 on the meter I was like ****. That, together with the nerve pain/tingles I get (which could well be B12 related), made me think the onset of poor glucose control since one or two family members have Diabetes.

Hi @ry350 ,

Welcome to the forum.

Be awair that some meter can read as much as 15% higher allowing for this possible margin..

Are you formally diagnosed with any form of diabetes. Don't worry, yer still welcome if not..

Na no diagnosis. Hope I avoid that for the rest of my days to be honest.

Reason for experimentally checking, like I said, is because I am having a few health issues at the moment so I am trying to 'process of elimination' everything, mainly EPI.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

No problem.

I also see no issue in checking BGs, logging along & in relation to your current diet. & checking trends.

But keep in touch with your doctor.

You actually sound like a grounded individual. Please feel free to ask questions. :)

Even the "norms" like my wife can get a little spike..

Of course not every non diabetic check BGs with a meter of CGM till the "time" they might need them..

Best wishes.
