Hi.
I’m a type 2, but I’m not 100% convinced as I was apparently a type 1 for 11 years (I feel like I’m in-between the two) and I am on:
25mg Empagliflozin x 1 a day
Glucophage SR 1000mg tablets x 2 a day
Levemier insulin 10 units x 2 a day
Fiasp insulin with carb counting with each meal.
I’ve asked to be referred to the consultant as my levels are anything between 12-20 most days.
I tried keto for a few months and my levels were still high.
I just wondered if anyone takes similar meds to me and I’m curious what kind of diet you do and how your levels are?
Thank you.
I'm type 2 (20 years) and on insulin (5years) and I do not take any other meds.
Abasaglar at night (14 units)
Humalog before 3 meals (2 units at breakfast, 4 units at lunch, 4 units at dinner).
For the Humalog I have a chart of readings/units to inject to follow, but I rarely if ever deviate from the standard units that I worked out with my Diabetes Dr/specialist when I lived in Germany a few years ago and it works very well for me. My average readings are 6.3 and my latest HbA1c reading was 37.4
I try to eat low carb but I'm not excessive about it, I might eat some cereal for breakfast, and I eat 2 small slices of Hovis Nimble Low Carb bread most days. I avoid potatoes and other obvious carbs though I might have one small portion of air fried oven chips once a week. I do have an occasional small treat but I usually have those when I'm out exercising (walking or cycling). I need to watch how much fruit I eat as a few times recently I've been over 9 and that for me is very very unusual. Obviously all sugar is out, I never eat cakes, biscuits, sweets, chocolate, pizza, etc, but I do enjoy a couple of squares of 85% dark chocolate most days. I also avoid most low calorie soft drinks as I don't think too many are good for you anyway.
I haven't tried Keto so I couldn't give an informed opinion about it, but I think its extreme and therefore can't be followed long term, whereas low carb can easily be a lifestyle that anyone can stick to, though yes I do get cravings for some sweet stuff most days!
If I had readings of between 12 - 20 I would be very concerned, are you sure you're not eating or drinking something you shouldn't?
Are you getting lots of exercise? It's really important that you do.
All the best on your journey, I hope you get lots of ideas and help/support from the Diabetes community.
