Is Coconut Oil a Superfood?

Hey, don't forget bacon!

To me, 'superfood' is generally a sign that a grower's assosciation or exporter has thrown some money at a PR company to promote their product. So much hype for 'coconut water', which is not much better than plain water, although more profitable. Then again, the coconut (and palm) are kind superfoods given there's a use for pretty much every part of it, ie coir fibre, shell, meat and water. Plus a fiendish beer made from palm sap. And the palms have a Darwinian function when they drop on people taking selfies under the trees..

Just what makes a certain food a superfood? I get the general impression that in the main it's a food fashion/fad thing. So called superfoods may well have some particular nutritional value, or medicinal benefits, but I believe these get latched onto and promoted as being something more "super" than they actually are.

Coconut oil is perhaps beneficial for us on LCHF diets though, in that it can provide a faster source of energy than normal fats due to its meduium chain fatty acid content. but whether that makes it a superfood or not?? :wideyed:
