lots of blood tests as he has been told he has hypothyroidism and he is awaiting results. He has put on a large amount of weight and probably needs to sort his diet better, but I would like to be able to point him in the direction of some constructive help via this, or some other site. A few years ago he had hyperthyroidism which was sorted after medication with neomercazole.

I am Type1 since the age of 7 and developed an underactive thyroid when I was 33. So yes they do appear to go hand in hand.

Hi Totsy and Scotty, thank you for your replies.

It will be interesting to see what his further blood tests say. He says he has put on a large amount of weight which initially he put down to his wife's excellent cooking, clearly it isn't just that. As I'm at high risk for Type 2, I wondered if there was a connection and you have both confirmed my feelings. However it may just be he has the thyroid problem, he didn't say he had an excessive thirst or anything so perhaps I'm worrying about nothing.

Totsy, why would HYPERthyroidism, then HYPO be a reason to develop diabetes? Did you not find it strange to have first one then the other - is that usual?

Hi gardengnome, It does seem quite common to have thyroid disorders with diabetes, not sure exactly why. I was diagnosed with Graves disease (autoimmune hyperthyroidism) about 20 years ago and after years of medication finally went for the radio-active iodine treatment which killed off part of the thyroid and I do expect to go under active eventually. It would be interesting to know why there seems to be a link between thyroid and diabetes and wonder if there has been much research to figure it out.

What age is your son?

When it comes to t2 and hypothyroidism I don't know of any connections apart from the fact that obesity triggers t2 and hypothyroidism make you obese.

Thyroid problems are usually autoimmune, while t2 d isnt, but t1 is.

He is 45 Totto, of course hopefully doesn't have diabetes, but I did just want to alert him to a possibility. He had hyperthyroidism about 5 yrs ago and now has hypothyroidism. In my ignorance I found that strange. He's living in the Far East for the moment but they are probably just as good, if not better, than the NHS in treating these problems.

It's actually far from clear that obesity triggers T2. That A is associated with B could mean that A causes B, it could just as easily mean that B causes A or that C causes both A and B.

Possible Cs here being insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia.
