Is he allowed?

My grandad was diagnosed with type2 diabetes a couple of weeks ago and due to his love in sweets, cakes, chocolate and ice cream he is feeling pretty down!
So this Easter I'd through Id cheer him up and make him some scones (no sugar in the recipe) I was wondering if he was allowed clotted cream? And strawberries?

Also It would be really great if anyone could give me a list of a few alternatives or something's he is allowed to eat!
We are all quite confused with what he can and can't eat at the moment! I really want to help them out! And I'd love to treat him to clotted cream scones and strawberries at easter!

Clotted cram and strawberries a big yes. Scones no, not really. It's not the sugar, but the flour. Scones have loads of carbs which raise our blood sugars.
 
WhitbyJet on here might have a good low carb scone recipe perhaps? :thumbup:
 
Hi. Yes, cream and fruit are generally OK for diabetics. If you are making/buying cakes, scones etc try to do a low-GI version by eliminating added sugar and using at least wholemeal or preferably mulit-grain complex flour; even ground almonds which are very low-GI. I've just bought some wholemeal Muffins from Sainsburys. They are sensibly low carb and the wholemeal flour helps a little bit.
 
You can bake lovely low carb muffins, waffles and biscuits, just search through ther low carb forum for recipes.

If you want to make a quick instanr jam, mash up berries with a fork, stir in sweetener

Yes there are a good few recipes on the DIABETES UK websit and some of them look really nice, i sometimes cook cakes and half the sugar content or put sweetner in. I have in the past gone and brought a couple of diabetic cook books and they have plenty of recipes in there with cakes, biscuits etc... i even done the diabetic bread pudding once and to be honest there was'nt much difference BUT quite a high carb treat due to the amount of bread used. Things in small amounts are fine i love strawberries and also clotted cream but that is one of those things you can't over indulge in if you know what i mean, but i'm sure as its easter a small treat won't hurt anyone.

Be very careful about Diabetes UK recipes, :shock: although they style themselves as a diabetes charity, some of their recipes are not too good for diabetics, carb wise, same goes for some diabetic recipe books,eg Anthony Worral thompson. They may be OK if you are on isulin, and can bolus for them, but are dire for tablets or diet & exercise.
 
Agree with fergus. My kids bought me the Anthony worral thompson book. Can't eat anything in it! Useless for me!
 
Agree with Fergus and Grazer. Lot of difference between an insulin injecting diabetic and plain vanilla on tabs Type 2. Not appreciated enough by many people.
