hey I wondered of people's experiences in terms to the following.

I am off ill today, I find I have a very delicate body and when I'm ill it's quite bad. I work hard on balancing my diabetes so I can embrace life, but I get ill way too much no matter what I do. To add to it I work in a medical setting so it's pretty much feeding time at the zoo for bugs. I have used everything to protect my immune system and lucky I have an awesome business associate who understands my needs. Anyway what I am trying to ask is do you get fed up of being so fragile too poorliness ?

To be honest, I'm pretty robust, only thing that's ever been wrong with me is female stuff and got that sorted with a hysterectomy. If I do get the odd cold I take Echinacea - swear by it.
I must have good genes, my dad is 84 and mum is 81, both pretty healthy also. And both have diabetes.

If I get a virus I'm always floored and I do seem to get ill more regularly than I did before i was diabetic. It's rubbish but I try not to dwell on it.

Hi and welcome. We all vary with regard to our immune systems and I'm one of the lucky ones. Diabetes when the blood sugar is under control should have no effect on you being more prone to bugs or being unwell.

I disagree, I have found that even when my BGs are under control, I am still more susceptible to infections, and my doctor says this is true for people with diabetes. I certainly had more and worse infections when my BGs were higher though.

Yes, I get really fed up about this too. I get the flu vaccine every year as soon as it is available and I find that helps a lot. I recently had a cold and needed several days in bed, and the cold went on for about 2-3 weeks, instead of the usual 1 week that most people can expect. I just get more rest, drink more water, and take paracetamol, throat lozenges and nasal spray as needed. Hope you are feeling better soon.

The main illnesses I get are colds but I get them much worse off than anyone else. I always get coughs after colds as well and can get them for weeks on end (much more than the average person and way past the 3 week or so mark for having to go to the GP) it sucks and makes me feel extremely run down. I do tend to get infections much easier as well.

I find that if there is any cough or cold going around I certainly get it. And it seems to last longer and linger in the background for weeks after. I don't tend to get seriously ill, but I definitely have a sore throat or runny nose alot of the time.
Diabetes does hit your immune system. Keeping tight comtrol of BMs helps, the higher your sugar the more food as such there is for the infection.

I definitely agree I get more illnesses than friends, and I wish sometimes I could wake up without a sore throat especially in the winter . But I have learnt to accept it.

Due to other health issues, I sometimes cannot eat or drink this brings it's own problems but throw diabetes onto the mix I get everything that's going. If anyone comes near me with a cough or cold I get the old detox spray out and spray everything they go near. I'm frustrated at the mo as I have oral thrush and a cold sore.

Thank you for everyone's kind words. It sounds quite even. I tend to find I am admitted to hospital about 3 times a year. This isn't because I'm not looking after myself it's generally because I get the bug and it scales so high it's hard to control. For example in 2008 I thought I had a cold and a high temperature it turned out to be swine flu yay! So I was I. Isolation and all from a cold

Shaz 67 sorry to hear your poorly at the moment thrush and cold sores can be so nasty hope you feel better soon. To the other posters it's nice to know I am not alone

My GP told me at diagnosis that diabetes could compromise my immune system and advised me to have the annual flu jab, which I do. I asked for the pneumococcal shot also, later on.

I had colds which were definitely worse, although nothing really long-lasting.

I've mentioned going organic in 2012 and that has made a difference. My reasoning was, that instead of asking my stomach and liver to process many additives every day, they had to be getting fewer additives and pesticides via food. IMO a carrot is a carrot and I doubt that the vitamin content differs much between organic and conventional.

I'm also not sure whether better taste is a result of cutting carbs right down and having almost zero processed food and sugar - and maybe a conventional carrot would taste as good.

But prioritising nutrient-dense, organic, low carb food seems to me to be keeping me healthier. I rarely get a cold, if I do it doesn't long and I don't get cystitis or thrush.
