Type of diabetes
Don't have diabetes
Hello,

I was diagnosed as Type 2 diabetes a few months ago because in my teenage years I've been overweight but before my diagnosis I lost a lot of weight so I was wondering is it normal for Type 2 diabetic to lose a lot of weight before diagnosis ?

Thanks

Undetected/undiagnosed T2D will mean you have high blood glucose, the symptoms of which are increased thirst and the resulting increased urination. If that continued for a long time it would result in weight loss.

Along with the thirst and urination the unexplained weight loss would be a symptom of T2D

When you lost a lot of weight prior to your diagnosis, was this lost deliberately?
Are you blaming your diagnosis on being overweight when you were younger and wondering why you have now been diagnosed when you are a lot slimmer?

Hi @MyYoungHealth I understand that you are 20 years old ? That's quite young for a type 2 diagnosis, if your weight loss wasn't deliberate in so much as the weight was lost without dieting and was lost very quickly then it's possible your type 2 diagnosis will need investigating further as you could have type 1. What medication are you taking ?

My weight loss wasn't intentional and I lost it fast but I was very happy I lost weight until I told my cousin 's wife who is a doctor and she was so shocked and told me that I need to get an appointment. I'm on metformin

Are you taking insulin now then ?

My weight loss wasn't intentional. Yes, I'm blaming the diagnosis on being over weight when younger as I used to eat unhealthy (but not meat a I'm vegetarian and not because of takeaways because we never really had takeaways or frozen food as my mum would always make dinner from scratch ) but because of all the junk food I would always eat/ portion size.

Before the diagnosis I also had increased thirst (I was drinking like a horse as if I'd never seen water before) and frequent urination.
