Hi all, im new to this so it may just be a rant.... i was diagnosed last July with HbA1c 87, so dn wanted me to go straight onto metformin which i declined as i thought at first diet and exercise would be a good baseline and go from there (she was not happy ) and after reading lots and looking at forums, lchf diets seemed the best option and 3 months later i had made her a bit happier as my levels had dropped considerably to 38 mmol, great, now my problem is sleep....is it normal to wake up every night 3-4am wide awake and exhausted. I've seen my gp and he adamant as my HbA1c is under control it is not to do with diabetes so he gave me sleeping tablets, great, sticky plaster at best. I do test, paid for myself, before bed low 6s when i wake they are raised to anything between 8-10, im a fit 39, 6ft 85 kilos. Any help-information will be greatly appreciated thanks

Hi Mangoman and welcome to the forum.

Not everything is diabetes related, there are many causes of sleep disruption and the advice on this site may be able to help you pinpoint your problem.

It could be that there is some underlying depression which is quite usual for people with diabetes.

When I changed to v low carb my sleep suffered - I didn't feel exhausted tho, quite the reverse - quite buzzy

I have suffered from severe insomnia for years mainly in the winter months. It became worse since I was diagnosed type 1 and I was eventually put on antidepressants after trying numerous other remedies such as light therapy and melatonin supplements. I've slept like a log this winter. So perhaps you are also suffering from SAD.

Alternatively you maybe having nighttime hypos and experiencing the somogyi effect.

its nice to know im not barking up the wrong tree, depression or stress dose not come close very happy cheery kind of bloke, interesting article thou, its just ive never had any problems sleeping untill the last few months

Hi, Mangoman (like the name) welcome to the forum.

When I first joined the forum, I was was having a few sleep problems. Many said to stop drinking coffee that contained caffeine, I did and that did help tremendously.

Do you think the current climate we experiencing is not helping.

Mind you I have got to say well done with what your already achieving,

Hope your sleeping habits soon get back to normal.
