Hi
I'm currently on 1,500mg metformin per day, next week (week 4) it increases again to 2.000mg per day then stays at that dosage as far as i know. For many years i've taken vitamin B complex, cod liver oil capsules, vitamin C, and valerian on a daily basis so i was wondering if it's ok to mix these supplements with metformin ? I've done this for the last 3 weeks since i was diagnosed with type 2 and so far so good. Are there any long term ill affects that i should know about ? and excuse me if i seem very naive, this diabetes diagnosis is a brand new thing to me Thanks !

Not sure of the answer Barry but I'll 'bump' your post up so that you get some replies, you could ask your Dr or Pharmacist the same question and they will tell you the answer.

Same as Noblehead, I don't know the answer but my gut instinct is that there shouldn't be a problem since most of the supplements occur in food anyway.

If Metformin is OK with food then ..................

I don't take any of those but have been taking menopace to help me through the menopause as I didn't want to go the HRT route, i spoke to the chemist before starting on them and she said the only thing to avoid is St. John's whort, it may be worth a chat with your local pharmacist next time you visit, they are very good at knowing contradictions between drugs and conditions

there are over 600 known drug interactions with met, ranging from Major to Minor (yes some of them can have deadly results)

14 major - drug interactions (82 brand and generic names)
604 moderate - drug interactions (4252 brand and generic names)
57 minor - drug interactions (358 brand and generic names)

Zantac and Met don't mix well its been known to boost the effect of Metformin
Yaz has been known to interear with Met and stop it from working effectivaly
Advil, Alka-Seltzer Cold and Sinus, Depo Provera, Dilation may interfere with blood glucose control and reduce the effectiveness of met
