Hi,

My gym has asked members to post a pledge for the year and i have decided that my pledge would be to come off my insulin injections for my type 2 diabetes.

Is this something that is possible?

I'll watch this one with keen interest as I am T2 on insulin and tablets

Hello and welcome,

Yes, you can get off the injections if you are still producing your own insulin, but you have to follow a suitable low carb diet to get those BS levels down. Then as your levels decrease, you will need less artificial insulin, but you will need to discuss this with your GP. If you are not producing much insulin naturally, it may not be possible.

Is it possible or not? Is this goal hard to achieve or not? It depends on how long you have type 2 diabetes, which medications you take and mostly on your diet.

That's right.

In most cases, to come off insulin injections for type 2 diabetes is much easier than people commonly think. Many thousands of diabetics have already done it. They maintain their blood sugar levels near normal throughout the day without insulin injections , jusi with healthy lifestyle.

you have to follow a suitable low carb diet

It's the main thing you have to do. Eating "balanced" diet overloaded with carbs is the wrong choice.

The second is physical activity, avoiding sedentary lifestyle at any cost to turn off your insulin resistance. Some authorities recommend weight lifting training. I suggest you to google what is Chi running and give it a try.

And the last is metformin tablets, especially overnight, to have normal blood sugar next morning, to overcome the dawn phenomenon.

When is it impossible to get off insulin injections? It is the case if your pancreas is too exhausted and it does not produce enough insulin. It happens if your diabetes was poorly treated for a long time, at least several years. It means type 2 diabetes has transformed to type 1. Sulfonylureas medications often cause it, and also diet overloaded with carbohydrates.

Test your blood sugar in laboratory to learn how much insulin does your pancreas produce now. It's the blood analysis for C-peptide.

In my case, it was possible to come off insulin, but gradually.
First cut down on bolus, then off it, then cut down on basal and off it! With HCPs monitoring progress, then onto Gliclazide then onto D&E.
My diet has always been "healthy" but cutting the carbs allowed me to do it.
Insulin at diagnosis ~32 basal & ~34 bolus.
Reduction was led by me, HCPs never hinted that I could get off completely, It was "suck it and see"
