I'm new to the insulin diabetes lark and take my blood sugars twice daily but the question I have to ask is it worth buying another meter as a spare as the one given out to me by the NHS isn’t working?

Definitely!
You're on insulin so you need to be able to test at any moment in case of hypos.
Do you drive?
You have to test before driving and at least every two hours in.
Off topic: Have you considered testing a bit more often than twice a day to get a better ideaon how your diabetes behaves throughout the day? A meter can be a very useful tool to find things you can tweak to get your blood glucose more stable.
