My wife & I were screened for heart & diabetes as part of a research study into the incidence of health problems with Asians - we live in Southall.

My Dr considered there was no risk, even with a cholesterol of 6.4. There were no other health factors. I had (& maintain) an active lifestyle & healthy diet.

That was about 4 years before I was diagnosed with diabetes at age 60.

I think for most type 2s it is a factor. And the factor is that we have all been following the lifestyle dietary advice issued by our illustrious government, and our state registered dieticians, and continually pumped out by the media, and have found ourselves to be either obese, or diabetic, or both, as a result. In the US they have at last started to realise this and have changed their dietary recommendations.

I am still healthy & fit 9 years after diagnosis at 69. The only change in my lifestyle is cutting out sugar, & increasing oat bran & low fat cholesterol lowering margarines.

As far as I am concerned the diet & lifestyle recommendations are good. Diabetes is not a genetic factor for me.

Hi, I fall into both categories. I am apple-shaped and overweight but my paternal grandmother and aunt both had diabetes. My doctor told me I was always going to get it. I probably would have got it later on if I had been slim.
