Just got out of hospital For the 5th time
Severe pancreatitis close to death.
So my insulin was all over the place and my triglycerides were extremely high.

Dietician as put me on an eating plan which is low fat but high in carbs!! For two weeks,to lower my triglycerides I did say to her it’s too high in carbs she said as a diabetic I still need to eat them for energy.
But carbs in all meals and extra carbs for snacking ? I’m not sure this is good for my pancreatitis. I get she’s trying to bring down the fat in my blood. But I still consumed
50 grams of carbs yesterday breakfast only not sure what to do advice pl

Hi @Nodemus , I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with both pancreatitis and dietary advice.

I found this old thread of yours, and it seems like you've been struggling with the same issues for a while: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/pancreatitis-diabetic-help.191016/

With the recurring pancreatitis, and also being on creon and insulin, are you very sure you have type 2?
Has your own insulin production been tested with a C-peptide test to diagnose T2 or rule out type 3C?

Are you still on Humulin I? No mealtime insulin?

I don't know enough about cholesterol to comment on that part of your post, but if it turns out your pancreas cannot produce enough insulin you may be better of with a mealtime (bolus) insulin in addition to your long acting.
Are you seeing an endocrinologist for your diabetes or only a GP?

OK? Hard to weigh this up. I’m an old school T1.

Snacking; is this your choice or advice. I was told to do this as a kid on porcine insulin. Mid morn, mid afternoon & before bed.. Carbs to feed the fixed dosed beast.

What meds are prescribed.?
What insulin/s do you take??

Is it dangerous?; How are your BG levels..?

Hi it was tested I’m sure and it came back as type 2. Im seeing and endocrinologist and a dietician who works with her. I have being in and out of hospital with pancreas for a while now but the last admission was the worst my partner was asked to call my family to come down to me.
I’m not on bolus injections with meals as of yet. Just being put creon which is new for me still on Humulin I only in the morning the hospital increased my Metformin to 2 in the morning and 2 at night but I haven’t started that yet. I need to speak to my community diabetic nurse. I have a few tests that haven’t come back I will chase them up!

Not really sure if this helps
I had acute Pancreatitis in 2010 (cause was Warfarin and Opiates)
since then it has carried and is now Chronic Pancreatitis the last Pseudo cyst was drained was drain 2015 and had no further acute episodes

I am type 2 and on Metformin and Gliclazide that I take twice a day and so far not experienced a Hypo and the highest I have suffered was 19mmol/L
I take Nutrizym 22 (had problems getting Creon) I was advised NOT to take large amounts of Carbs but follow a low fat /high Protein diet instead

My Cholesterol is below 4 and do not take statins

I know that there is a chance that I will move over to T1 as my Pancreas self destructs but at present I am stable but I do have to be careful with products from shops with hidden sugars and we have resorted to using fresh food as much as possible

I have no idea of the answers but the questions I’d be asking are related to

1. how high are my glucose levels now and what will the advised diet do to them
2. Does my insulin seem sufficient to cover the advised diet
3. How high are the triglycerides
4. what am I at most risk from in reality in the short and long term. Is it purely theoretical or near guaranteed?
5. Am I definitely still “just” type 2? How long ago was c peptide tested? Has the pancreatitis affected production either now or in the past making me type 3c even if I am also type 2. In which case do I need bolus insulin as well.

Shes wrong that you “need” carbs for energy. She means glucose for energy. There are alternatives in gluconeogenisis for where that glucose comes from. And do you really need 100‘s of grams or just the 130g typically recommended for diabetes.
