im newly diagnosed T2 but not on meds. Having done some research and taken advice from my DN I decided low carb was the way forward. I however seem to have gone Keto. I got some urinalysis stix and am definitely in Keto (second or third from highest). I also started logging my food in MFP to make sure I wasn’t doing too much or too little of anything. I’ve no gallbladder and am a bit cautious with a lot of fat in one go. Steady and often is better.

Naturally I seem to have settled on carbs 30-50g which is consistently 15% Fat is about 55% and protein 30%. I’m aiming for 1300 calories but struggling to reach that. I’m not hungry often and eat If I am , though not the junk of old I still want in my mind. I’ve noticed no Keto flu, excess urination, fruity breath etc. Only thing I’ve noticed is a small change in BM, a little less often, and have tried to up fluids to help move things along a bit more smoothly. I’ve lost nearly 3kg in under 3 weeks

I ask because another thread said these ratios aren’t Keto and now I’m confused

You could well be in ketosis at those carb levels.. it differs for everyone although to "guarantee" ketosis people usually say 20g of carbs or fewer but as with everything we are all different. As for fewer BM's I guess you are eating less and therefore pooing less as well. I usually say less c**p in less c**p out so unless you are struggling I wouldn't worry. These days eating mainly meat I tend to go only every 2 or 3 days anyway.

I've eaten a low carb/ketogenic diet (usually under 50g carbs a day) for well over four years and I've never actually bothered much with "official" macros - and I think you may very well find that if you eat a limited range of carbs, then the percentage of protein and fat will vary anyway depending on an individuals size (height/weight), activity levels, etc.

I simply check my glucose levels on a regualr basis and occasionally check my ketone levels. I know roughly from experience the number of carbs I'm having, I eat around the amount of protein I've always eaten and which is enough to keep my body maintained and mended, and add enough fats to help fill me up. And the state of my ketones varies depending on whether I'm simply burning dietary fuel or whether I also need to dip in to my body's stored fatty fuel deposits.

Being keto/fat adapted is essentially the way our bodies are intended to work, they weren't designed to eat very high carb diets. But I get the feeling that ketogenic diets often gets turned into some weird sort of Keto cult! So just keep on doing what you're doing - your body appears to know better than someone else's opinion of what it needs to function correctly. You're a living human being not some piece of calibrated laboratory equipment, so another person's way of managing their diet may very well not suit your requirements. If you're producing ketones, have a steady and adequate flow of energy, mental clarity and your glucose levels are improving/stable - then you really don't need to worry too much about other people's opinions. (Including mine! :D)

Thanks for the reassurance. As it seems all positive for now I’ll stick with it as it is for now making sure I get loads of water. I don’t particularly want to lower my carbs any further either.

Not sure I’m eating loads less in quantity but definitely eating more in quality. Perhaps I’m just using it all and have less waste to get rid of. I’m a little wary as i also have diverticulosis so don’t want a backlog to flare that up.
