Is this diabetes?

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
I was chatting with one of my exercise class, who is diagnosed T2 and using Metformin and Glicclazide.
She tests twice weekly, eats anything she likes, including cake and is always in the 4s. She told me that once she stopped taking her tablets for a few weeks and ended up in the 5s and 6s. Iwonder if she's trully diabetic at all.

As she's taking a hypoglycaemic, then if she doesn't have some form of resistance wouldn't she be in some danger?

She's only testing twice a week - we have no ideas what her numbers are in between, we don't when she's testing.

Regards, Tubs.

I would say yes she is diabetic but the constant exercise might be what is keeping her BG's down to a decent level. Some medication varies between each Type 2 and some Type 2's don't need tablets at all.

I've been told exercise plays a major role in keeping the diabetes under control. As soon as I stop getting ill (just had 3 colds from hell over the past few months and stomach pains. Currently I have tendonitus and frozen shoulder and seized up on Thursday evening) I will embark on some form of exercise each day and hopefully my BG's (currently 16 mmol) will go down and be stable one day!

Dear Rach,
I wish you well and hope you feel well enough to exercise soon. I go to water exercises twice a week, with the aforementioned lady, who is going on for 80 and has had a knee replaced. she does the water exercises every week too. In fact we are the "founder members" of the class. I don't know how much more exercise, Jean does in the week, but I suspect not much. she doesn't walk very well.
Have you looked for a water exercise class? I can do things in the water, which I'd never manage on land. In fact I'm proud of myself today. Jean dropped her glasses to the bottom of the pool and i was able to dive down and get them. I also wear glasses, but leave mine in a case in my swimbag.

Quite, she may be doing what she was told and only testing her FBG, she might have a shock if she were to do some 1 hour postprandials. My FBG is nearly always in the fours, rarely the fives, but my postprandials have been all over the place from over 11 to 3.5.

Often the postprandials are the first to go, it may be she was lucky to have been diagnosed early enough that the FBG didn't follow them.

1 hour post prandials??? No no no... 2 hours! always 2 hours... I think anyone who takes 1 hour post prandials would be in for a shock !?

I'd agree, 1 hour post prandials (if you can get the strips) are useful in building a profile.

Regards,

I would say in general a 2 hours PP is the way to go...

The only point of testing at 1 hours is while building a profile...

At one hour should be the highest that you BG used raise after a meal... But if you are eating a meal with high fat content, this can effect the asorbtion of carbs in that meal and delaying it giveing a bit of a false reading at the two hour mark!

So (again dependin on test strips) prehaps a 3 hour test to see if you have fallen or the asorbtion has been shuffed along a bit by fat content?

You can get swim goggles with lenses - mine are -8.5. If they had been available 60 years ago I might have enjoyed swimming. I've only used them once.

Regards,

yes the two hour numbers tell you how quickly you are going back down but for diet control the peaks are the key, mine are generally around the hour mark but I've found on occasion I can shoot very high at 1/2 hour or so if I have an infection: however this doesn't correlate to symptoms in the way the 1 hour number does.

Hey thanks Hanadr. I have looked into water aerobics actually. However my job changed my hours so it makes it awkward to attend the Monday session at 7:15pm now :| There is, however a Wednesday session just after work finishes which I could attend so I might give that a whirl. I have had long discussions with my job about how they keep switching my hours and how it is extremely unsuitable for me as I have to keep to some sort of routine - however initially they wouldn't listen. I am now past my probation and feel they should respect my condition and my needs therefore if they change my hours again it is tough luck for them because I won't :!: So my new plan is swimming tomorrow morning, treating myself to rare massage in afternoon. Sunday is rest day and organise what I can for the following week day. Monday is back swimming again whilst boyfriend goes to gym and Wednesday will be water aerobics day. Then the following Saturday I'll start the exercise routine again. I might exchange swimming for walking on a nice day - however I feel overall the low impact aerobic type exercises with a bit of fun involved are what I need not high impact lengthy gym sessions or aerobics which just kill me :!:

As for testing BG's one hour after (is it postprandials - never heard of this term before but just starting to grasp it), I do this and then two hours after as I don't like to think they are going too high. It is a habit, but at the same time I am also trying to build a profile so I can gain optimum BG control as soon as possible.
