Diabetes nurse gave me my results and said my hba1c was 53 and thats very good but when i looked at conversion chart surely thats apx 8 in the old chart
Now wonder what i should be looking at numbers wise

Hi @borderter
According to my chart 53 is actually 7% ( 8% is 64)
For people with Diabetes a HbA1c of 48 or 6.5% is considered good control, so you are a bit high
Im a type 2 and aim for a figure in the 5 range,Im currently 5.6%, but I follow Low Carb to keep it that low.

As Randburg says, plus a bit by NICE. Their guidelines as shown on the Diabetes UK website:-

Children with Type 1 diabetes (NICE 2004)
  • Before meals: 4–8mmol/l
  • Two hours after meals: less than 10mmol/l
Adults with Type 1 diabetes (NICE 2004)
  • Before meals: 4–7mmol/l
  • Two hours after meals: less than 9mmol/l
Type 2 diabetes (NICE 2008)
  • Before meals: 4–7mmol/l
  • Two hours after meals: less than 8.5mmol/l
Sometimes I think that DNs take the "I don't want to upset you" approach, bless 'em. Sorry, that's day to day.

HbA1c targets
For most adults with diabetes, the HbA1c target is below 48 mmol/mol, since evidence shows that this can reduce the risk of developing complications, such as nerve damage, eye disease, kidney disease and heart disease. Individuals at risk of severe hypoglycaemia should aim for an HbA1c of less than 58 mmol/mol. However, any reduction in HbA1c levels (and therefore, any improvement in control), is still considered to have beneficial effects on the onset and progression of complications.

(%) (mmol/mol)
6.0 42
6.5 48
7.0 53
7.5 58
8.0 64
9.0 75
