Hi @Boozon, yep now on basal although if you have a look at my other posts you’ll see I’m struggling due to allergies. On my 3rd type and now had to stop that as well as my reaction has got too bad. Seeing the drug allergy specialist next week, so hopefully some answers soon. Anyway my last HBA1C was ok and I had been taking my BG 5 or 6 times a day as the consultant wanted me to monitor more closely. The Consultant was more concerned about the amount of high points and the swing rather than the average. They suggested that I ought to think about going on to insulin and so I now have basal twice per day but a low dose for now. I’ve also read that it could help prolong the life of your own beta cells as well but don’t think that’s proven at all. I have to say other than the fact that I permanently have hives (which is not usual) my BG control has been so much better.

I guess it’s inevitable at some point that you will need to take insulin and I’m no expert but maybe others can say whether it’s better to start earlier or resist for as long as you can. I’m hoping that better BG control is a plus and that I can prolong a low dose rather than having sporadic control and then straight on to high dose and dosing for meals as well.

Chat it through with your DSN/consultant as to what might be best for you. Good luck! Wishing you all the best. Pete

Thanks Pete @Pmerrill. Similar story with me. Last Hba was 48 even though I told the consultant i go up to 14 with some chips......she said I would too!
Need to go back in February for another review but would prefer to start on insulin sooner rather than later if it meant was better for me.
Have they not put you on bolus too? Or has the basal been enough to stop after meal spikes? Cheers Rob

Hi @Boozon, basal has been enough so far. I get the occasional spikes if I’ve overdone the carbs but must admit I’m checking fasting, pre meal and bed time BG which have all been lower on basal. So I guess I wouldn’t always pick up post meal spikes.
