A couple of times 9when at work) I have after having breakfast of porridge forgot to take my Metformin and have done so about half hour to hour later. The 3rd time I took it an hour later shortly after started to feel shaky and my legs felt wobbly and just felt like I was going to faint. Took my BS and it had shot up to 14.3 This has never happened before. Occasionaly I would forget after my eveing meal and it never happened then so why was this? I take 2x500mg one in morning after breakfast and one after evening meal my BS have been reasonably stable (I was told that my BS should be between 6 to 7) I am watching my carbs and have lost 21/2 stone in mostly eating salads.

So can anyone tell my why that spike?

Much as I love porridge (particularly as I am Scottish) I can't have it for breakfast as it was causing a large increase in my BG too (and for a long time afterwards). It may be that your body just can't tolerate the porridge. You could try a smaller portion and see what that does but if you consistently get the big jump then it's time to seek an alternative breakfast.

I do my BS 2 hours 3 hours after the porridge when I have taken my metformin straight away and it has been 6.6 7.1 so I haven't been worried as it seems to be a good reading. I am 61 and as my doctor said my readings should be between 6 to 7 then I thought having porridge was okay. Its so difficult to find something that you can have for breakfast = I do make it with water and have no sugar sometime I put a couple of spoonfuls of yogurt in it or a drop of milk just to cool it down and the yogurt (plain) makes it taste better. As my BS seems okay except for that one spike I though porridge is okay - I have salads mostly for my other meals.

I have had a bit of trouble at work as I already have an incurable blood disease (Polycycthemia Vera)and have to attend hospital every 2mths (usually have a pint of blood removed) for that and I got a cancerous tumour in my bladder last feb 09, which is now showing signs of coming back and have to have time off every 3 mths to have that looked at. Now that I am diabetic my boss tried to get me laid off through being sick - but he couldn't do it. He is making my life difficult now for some time any way I have been offered a bit of a goldenhandshake as I have been with the company for 20 years now on my 21st and have accepted. I just don't want all the hasle and upset any more. The stress that I get I think doesn't help with my blood or the diabetics. I do have to travel doing 108 mile a day getting up at 20 past 4 leaving about 20 past 5 to miss the traffic getting to work about 6:30 and leaving at 3:30 getting home around 5:00 to 5:15 sometimes later if traffic is bad so it is a relief to accept the offer and will try and get a job temping or something nearer home if I can.

The Polocycthemia means that I get over heated and don't cope with the heat very well hot feet and hot hands I even wear sandals with no socks etc just bare feet in the winter as they get so hot. Seems worse this year don't seem to be able to cope at all and a friend said that diabetics don't cope with heat so that would seem to be the reason 2 illnesses on top of each other that don't cope with the heat very well. My Blood disorder have similar symptons to diabetics - giddyness, blurred vision, fatigue so when I started to have these really bad I thought my blood was high (it was but not my blood count but my blood sugar 25.3) and I laugh now my mouth was dry and I thought my slavia glands were drying up because of my age!!

Am feeling quite depressed about everything. Thank goodness for this forum as it does help me a lot thank you everyone and who eveer got this started thanks. Sorry I have gone on just needed to get this off my chest.

Hi Sue :)

It seems to me that you have more problems than any one person could reasonably be expected to deal with!

I think that you just need to eat to your meter and if you can manage porridge with good enough BG levels and also keep well enough to enjoy life then I would just go for it! Sometimes you just don't need to add to the complications that life throws at you!

If you don't manage to get any work hopefully you will be able to enjoy retirement. It is surprising how much it actually costs you to go to work and also how much you can manage on when you find it necessary. Go to the Citizens Advice Bureau and ask them to help you find out if there are any allowances that you could apply for which will help you.

It is also worth remembering about equations! In practical terms this is putting at one end of the scales all the things you decide to do and at the other end putting all the other things that you decide not to do. Then you weigh it all up. When you make a decision to do something, anything, then you are also deciding not to do other things. You can be surprised by how much certain things unexpectedly matter when you put them into the 'equation balance'.

Re-evaluating what is really important and deciding your own future can be a very therapeutic and cathartic experience. :)

Thankyou for your responses. I have been given a Compromise Agreement by my company and am speaking with a solicitor on Tuesday 6th July pm (which company are paying for). I also went to Retinal screening the other week and have been recalled to see the specialist on Tuesday 6th July am. Need to know the results of that as to whether I sign the agreement as if I can't drive then I wont be able to work at the place I work as my only means of getting there is via car. there is no bus or train that I could get to get there. Well I could go all the way into london and then back up out to Stevenage but that would be a very expensive and long option to do every day.

I feel so confused and worried about everything as I do have some debts and how I will be able to afford to pay for them. What if I can't get work in the town I live and its all just on top of me. Feel like giving up and really getting into a stew over all this. Can't seem to get a positive side on anything. My husband is no help as one of his drinking buddies who is diabetics says just take the tablets and eat what you want but I have tried to explain the dangers of that and he doesn't take note thinks that I am "playing on it". Controlling my BS as much as I can by food plus my 2x500mg metformin is important to me as I don't want to have to increase the metformin. My brother is on metformin and actos as he doesn't control his food and is threaten to be put on insolin.

Forgive me for going on it helps to let it all out but doesn't solve my problems will have to try and sit down and take my head out of the sand and look at everything see what Tuesday brings.

thanks

Aaawww Sue,

You really are having a tough time at the minute. I hope things work out for you and you feel better soon.

See what next week brings and take it from there.
