Hi,

I am a newly diagnosed T2 diabetic (July 13) i have had a few rough days where my BS is slowly going down from 20.5. Last night about 3:30am i was very low (for me) so i got up had a couple of biscuits and some orange juice. Half hr after having this and getting back to 8.4BS....this is low for me as i currently ride between 12-15 i was sick.

I have had lows before eaten and felt better, never been sick before. Is this normal?

Thanks

Don't know what to say Vicky really. You should be aiming for under 6/7. 12/15 isn't normal not for anybody. A lot on here either low carb or low carbish, what advice have you been given by your nurse? If its the usual eat 'starchy carbs with every meal' it really isn't the best advice. Have a look round the site and see what others eat.

Hi I presume your are on medication. Prob metformin. If this is so then I beleive I read somewhere that carbs and sugar and metformin dont particularly mix well. I beleive metformin is a gastric glucose inhibitor. (I may be wrong or termed it wrong) what you ate was all carbs and sugar WHAT WHERE YOU THINKING . If you are feeling a false high never feed it sugar or carbs that will only teach you body what to expect . Im afraid it you body trying to reduce its bg levels and you need to tolerate it as unpleasant as it is if you want to controll it thats what you have to do. If you keep feeding it .it will eventually damage you .

My nurse has told me they want to take me down very slowly so I don't end up on the floor as most evenings before I was diagnosed I would have been up in the 30's. she has told me to aim for 10-15 ATM until I see her again. As it was the very end of July I was diagnosed so very new. She hasn't said too much about carbs but from looking on here I have looked at things myself.

I am on 2 metformin a day and yep I did eat sugar and carbs as I was nearly on the floor! Funny thing about it was it was only the orange came up. To explain a bit more so you see why I am being taken down so slowly is that my dad is T1 and has been since I was 11 so everything in my house is sugar free (before diagnosis) so I wasn't eating too badly but was still super high. Everything I have been doing and eating has been fine up until last night when for me it was a major low. Hope this explains the WHAT WERE U THINKING..... All different and have to go down at different times ;-)

I appreciate the need to go down gradually and that 8 may seem low for u and that's fine but to feed it sugar or carbs? Ur just going to run the risk of causing damage to urself.

It might feel like a low but clearly it isn't and so u need to grin and bear the 8 so ur body gets used to the lowER levels gradually. If u start eating sugar or carbs when u hit an 8 ur going to shoot straight back up so how is ur body supposed to get used to u gradually going lower if ur forcing urself higher whenever you gradually come down?

I think ur DSN should have probably explained it a bit better if ur treating false lows as they should never be treated wi anything that will push them back up to dangerous levels.

Also, when a gradual drop is recommended it's usually when u have been suffering blurry vision as ur vision can be effected during the drop. My DSN certainly never told me to take my time coming down, anything above 7.5 mmol causes damage and so the quicker the better to get down to a safe level as feeling ill is just part and parcel of diabetes I'm afraid.

Hiya, when I started on Metformin I used to be sick sometimes. Particularly if I had a bit of a sugar binge, its kind of the new normal I'm afraid....

If you are feeling a bit low why not try a piece of fruit instead of biscuits (in the bin I suggest) or fruit juice (just liquid sugar, very bad for you, the manufacturers would have you think its a health food ... its not! Down the sink I would suggest also). Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries all of the berries are fairly safe for diabetics in moderation. Even a plum is not so bad, would not really recommend peach, apple or orange - well at least not a whole one, maybe a quarter would be ok. Nuts are also good, walnuts, pecans, macadamia nuts, handy to keep in the cupboard.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies I spoke to my nurse and she was happy with everything. The sickness was just a blip, today after lunch I am on 9 which ATM is fine for me until I see the DN again. I understand that for some experienced and controlled members my bs looks high but going from 30ish to 9 in a little under a month is good according to the drs here lol

I do normally go for fruit and nuts etc but I do have the juice and biscuits there for a just incase. I'm only 29 so quite young to be T2 but lived with my dad having it for yrs so get some good advice from him too. He was the same as me before diagnoses and was sick a few times while bringing himself down.

Did u have full bloods done for diagnosis (GAD, C-peptide etc..) ?

Just u do seem very young for type 2. If ur only 29 I would keep an eye on ur BS just incase weightloss/exercise/oral meds start to not be enough to control ur BS as so many people on here alone keep being misdiagnosed as type 2 only to find they are actually slow-onset type 1. It happened to me too but they did full bloods on me straight away with me not being overweight and only being 26.

There is a possibility of type 1 I have a hospital appointment at the beg of October so shall see then. Not sure on the bloods as they did a whole load for a problem I have with my back and just added one in with my dad being diabetic. Guessing ill prob have everything done at the hospital
