At the school where I work a young lady has started who is diabetic and to say she seems to know quite a bit about it is an understatement. We were obviously talking like you do about injections, insulin etc. I was explaining about my wonderful GP (NOT). I told her that whilst that i was in hospital I had been told by the consultant that saw me that i should stop taking the Glucophage SR whilst on insulin (Novomix 30), :D , which i was delighted with as i've had a bad stomach ever since i've been on it. However, when i went back to my GP he said I could not stop the metformin as this would be detrimental to my diabetes :? . Has anyone else had experience of this type of cross information ? If so pray tell

i had a similar problem,
my usual dr put me on metformin nearlly 2 yrs ago to add to my lantus,a couple of months ago my gp was on hols so had to see another who took me off it straight away and said it werent beneficial for type 1,s,both work together but clearly have differing views :D

Hmm Interesting - I am type one and was put on metformin in June after diagnosis in April. Didn't really have much explanation as to why (my first meeting with the clinic doctor) and was disappointed as I had been trying really hard and my BG had steadyed by then. Will ask why next time!

The action of Metformin is to work against Insulin resistance, thus it is mainly used by T2s. It will help a T1 who has become insulin resistant. This question reads as if some doctors think that Metformin is an insulin promoting medicine like thesulphonylureas, which are useless to all T1s. If a doctor wants to change your meds, especially if you've been getting on well with them, ALWAYS ask why. I would NEVER take a medication if I didn't know what it does in the human body.
I'm a T2 and find Metformin is all the medicine I need to keep my numbers on target, that and the reduced carbs. All my medicines have been decided by my doctor AFTER discussion with me. then I am lucky enough to have a great GP ( I've never seen the diabetologist)

Once again thanks to you all. It's just that before i went into hospital my readings were all over the place. Once in there and taken off the Metformin and just put on the insulin my levels became very stable. So on reflection, even I now think it's a bit strange that i was put back on it but once again thanks for the info.
