Is this where people go wrong?

I've just stumbled on a great Orson Welles quote.

"My doctor told me to stop having intimate dinners for four; unless there are three other people. "

THis is a factor, but we now know it's WHAT you eat as much as portion size that matters.

I have to disagree a little here Hana, portion sizes are VERY important to some of us. More so than the actual carbs or type of carbs. I can eat Pineapple, Banana, Bread loads of things, but all in strictly controlled portions.

I eat off a side plate and that keeps everything under control, just plain old phsychology, it looks like a full plate so the brain thinks, "Wow, a plate full of food. Yippee !" You might think that I would feel hungry later, not a bit of it. I hardly ever snack, well OK, the odd Mars Bar perhaps. :D All accounted for though. Part of my overall daily reduced carbs intake. All it takes is willpower and motivation. Something I have been told I have in abundance.

In my case I am able to eat many of the things you and many couldn't. I use the low GI AND low GL method coupled with reduced carbs. It's a simple system and it is very healthy. Some people seem to think that it can't possibly be good or good for Bg levels. I think a 98% on target Bg level and NO oral meds anymore up to the start of my illness speaks for itself.

Now that works great for me, but it does mean I weigh everything I eat and calculate the carb content of every single item of food that I eat, even if it is only an Egg, it has some carb content.

I once totalled up all the things that I had been told were carb free, what an eye opener that was !
I was eating about 15g more carbs per day than I thought I was, hence now the counting of it ALL. Drinks,Veggies snacks, everything ! There are many hidden carbs. A low carb friend did the same and also had a similar result. That too resulted in drastic changes to the diet and an instant spurt in the stalled weight loss.

Ray, I thought if it was an 'intimate' dinner then it was for two people..........now I've heard about this sort of thing.........is it different where you come from......... I thought you didn't listen to medical advice anyway !
Ken.

I agree about the hidden carbs. I don't eat any carbs in the form of "carby foods" i.e no bread, rice, potatoes, pasta etc. I only consume carbs that come in low carb vegetables etc. and still finish up with between 40g and 60g per day. Unusually perhaps, I'm a cabbage, cauliflower and broccolli junky, add in mushrooms, sprouts, onions and a glass of wine and I manage to reach the above figures.

Ken; I do listen to medical advice, but don't blindly follow it before I've checked it's veracity. I've never met Orson Welles' doctor! :)

I think part of the problem is this blasted "P" word (portion). It means absolutely nothing, is totally subjective, appearing to be completely flexible - possibly according to how hungry you are, I don't know? My own opinion is that unless you're actually weighing everything you eat, you're not controlling your intake of anything. I have to weigh anything that has a hint of carbohydrate just to calculate correct insulin dose, which isn't too bad a starting point.
