hi
I'm off to Venice for the last week of January. Does anyone have any lchf restaurant menu tips to offer? I'd be grateful to hear if you do.

Baked fish ( not battered or breaded) salads, hold the croutons, bunless burgers, steak and veggies hold the potato.

hi
I'm off to Venice for the last week of January. Does anyone have any lchf restaurant menu tips to offer? I'd be grateful to hear if you do.

I had salmon for the main, ask for more vegetables too or a side salad instead of potatoes if you wish, It was a lovely meal, very tasty and the chef tweaked the sauce for me because I have coeliac.

On Italian menus you get an antipasti course, which is starters and some of them might be lower carb. Then you get primi piatti, which is where all the carby pastas will be. Then comes the secondi piatti, which are usually the meat or fish courses. They could well be your best bet for lchf food, but they often do not have vegetables, so you might have to order contorno - the veggie side dishes. I love Italy and Venice is fab. I couldn't resist the ice-cream though - so ended up indulging in some carbs and having to walk them off sight-seeing!

Have a great time!

@johnme It's more than a decade since I was in Venice and it was well before we began low carb, but I did keep a diary, so can tell you what we did eat: Lots and lots of fish and shell fish. This was served with polenta, risotto, spaghetti and potatoes, not all at once and, of course, we would now be avoiding this aspect of the meals. The hotel we were in served a good breakfast, where I seemed to focus on ham, cheese and salad.
Before we go abroad, I use google translate to get the local language version of, "my husband is diabetic, he must not eat sugar or carbohydrate" and have it printed out and to hand in my handbag in case my pronunciation isn't good enough.

Thanks for these suggestions all. Very helpful. I hadn't thought of the ice cream problem - I've been very good at low carbing for the last couple of months - it suits me. But then no one has tempted me with a bowl of Italian ice cream!

Have fond memories of Venice and the food, some very good calves liver fried with onions would be my lowish carb pick :-) important thing is to enjoy yourself and your trip :-) another low carb treat is coffee in st mark's Square, may make Starbucks seem like a real bargain but makes a lovely memory!
