Does anyone else suffer itching with their Diabetes?

I have it a lot, have done for some time and I itch in places that I would never have thought you could itch. I'm going to see the doctor on Friday and see the nurse tomorrow but after the nurse's response on Friday about something I mentioned, I'm now sceptical of asking about it at all. Before joining here I looked up and researched a little on Diabetes and the itching repeatedly came in the symptoms for Diabetes. I never thought of the itching being connected and was surprised to read that it was.

Does anyone also know why it can cause itching? I know I have to tell the doctor on Friday, (who I hope will know about this), but at the moment, I feel a bit alone with it.

i have itched terribly for years but dont know if its diabetic related, i take anti histamines every day and it helps alot

The level of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, bradykinin is usually high in diabetics than normal population. That in turn will cause itching. Anti histaminics ll do a good job in controlling. Diabetic polyneuropathy also causes stimulation of pruriceptors in skin causing itching. Any eczema, fungal infections also a reason. There are many postulated mechanisms, but the exact cause is not discovered yet:eek:

I never thought of antihistamines Totsy but yes, that's a good option. I have a cream but you can't apply it everywhere. I didn't think my itching was connected but after reading up on Diabetes, I began to wonder. I'll have a chat with the doctor this Friday coming and see what she can advise.

Thanks for the info there debbie. I'll have to go and have a read up on this. I saw the itching as a symptom in so many links but didn't know why.. If an antihistamine can soothe it a little, I'm all for trying it.

I had itchy skin in various places, seemingly for no reason, but once I reduced my blood sugar levels it disappeared, so for me it was definitely related to diabetes. Of course, that may not be the same for everyone, as there could be lots of other causes. Just my personal experience.

There are so many symptoms that can be related to diabetes - but can also indicate other issues, so definitely worth mentioning to your doc. Liver issues can also cause intense itching.

Hubby get's itching in places he dosen't like to shout about, so he buys medicated talc from Amazon(he's not diabetic, it's down to his nylon uniform, so he tells me). But I use on my c section scar, when the hot weather comes, before it gets itchy. One is called monkey bum (lol) but hubby uses gold bond, smells nice and minty. Maybe that would help in some places, just an idea, and buying from Amazon is cheaper £10 compared to Boots at £20.

I had put it down to eczema which I suffer from, but it got so intense I had a look around the web and realised it could be due to Diabetes. I get allergies in any case so I take Piriton almost daily it can be anywhere usually my back, arms and legs. I use an aqueous cream on my legs and arms and let Piriton take care of the rest.

I had no idea that the itching could be related and my sugar intake, via chocolate, etc, has been a lot before being diagnosed. It was a bit of a surprise to know this could be related to it. I see the doctor on Friday so I'll mention it then. I have one cream from the doctor for the itching already and I'm hoping that now I'm Type 2, she will join the dots. Fingers crossed Indy it isn't a problem with my liver. That was checked when I had my second fasting blood test. I'm hoping by cutting out the sugar, it will lighten up. I can use the antihistamines if need be. Thanks everyone.

My partner itched through lactose intolerance.
He's now lacto and itch free.

I've had the odd, itchy bout of candida (in my frisky high carb phases). It fades away when I get back to the low carb grind.

Oh, and itching is a contra-indication on a huge number of medications.

I have terrible itching , I use eurax cream or solution , antihistamines , and for the groin area which is the worst carex medicated hand soap and dry properly. But low carbs help immensely.
