I have type2 diabetes which is reasonably controlled by statins & metformin tablets, the only trouble i get is at night,i can sit/lie in bed & watch t.v or read a book for a few hours & be perfectly fine but as soon as i lower my adjustable bed & relax ready to go to sleep i get this tingly, itchy feeling in my feet which drives me crazy & stops me going to sleep because i have to rub/bang my feet together to try stop the itching which can last up to 3 or 4 hours at a time, this has been getting worse the last week & i have been getting out of bed so as not to disturb my wife & i have been playing games on my computer until the wee small hours instead of sleeping,i used to get this before but i found that a visit ( or two) to the loo solved my problem but the past week nothing has helped!!
Is this common amongst diabetics & if so how can i prevent this from happening?? as i need sleep more than solitaire on my computer!!

Hi dave,
Do you attend a foot clinic - see a podiatrist for a foot/feet screening check ?
If you do, you can request an appointment and get your feet checked over.
If not I would suggest going to see your GP and discuss this with them.
As the weather goes colder it can and does affect our extremeties, and can with some diabetics aggravate nerve damage and neuropathy in our feet. [it does me!]
Have you ever suffered from chillblains? these can make the feet tingle and itch and get painful too.
As a diabetic you are entitled to an annual foot screen with a trained/qualified podiatrist or chiropodist.
Usually upon diagnosis your GP will refer you for this.
With the colder weather the blood vessels shrink then when you warm up they expand causing the sensations you describe. [like contracts then expands]
The only thing that helps me, is prior to bed time, a careful warm foot soak , moisturise feet well with diprobase emollient cream [gp script] then warm cosy socks on .
Take my neuropathy meds pregablin and cocodamol prior to retireing to bed.
This eases my pain, itching, burning, cramps in my toots! Can settle down well when have done this routine, dont disturb my hubby either.
Hope this helps? It does work for me.
Anna. x :D

Hi Dave,
Same thing happened to me.Started sseveral years ago (been diagnosed type 2 since 2005) but my GP kept prescribing me fungal cream. The itching was unsrcatchable and felt like it was inside my foot close to the sole area. Excrutiatingly itchy, almost painful. Get it checked out at the earliest opportunity.
I don't want to sound alarmist or worry you but mine turned out to be the onset of peripheral neuropathy. My toes started to feel like my socks were curled up underneath them and then I ended up with two massive blisters on the soles of my feet which turned into diabetic ulcers. These took over 6 months to heel with weekly visits to a podiatrist.
The whole process took about three years from itchiness to ulcers so you won't wake up tomorrow with major problems. Just don't let the health service fob you off! My GP kept telling me I have'nt been diagnosed with diabetes long enough to have peripheral neuropathy! Now my toes and feet are quite numb and I have to be very careful and check my feet daily.
If I can offer you any more advice ( Getting a second opinion or self monitoring of BCL's etc ) then please let me know.
Wish you well.

I have had the same symptoms for years now. It does concern me. I've only been diagnosed as pre-diabetic.

I do know that peripheral neuropathy can also be generated by just being overweight. You don't have to have diabetes to develop it. I've seen a few stories where people have developed it and put an end to it by losing the weight.

Hi All.
This is an old thread that I have dug out to look up chillblains again...
Am suffering from these again plus cold itchy feet !
Waking up with these and suffering broken sleep as result.
Tried wearing socks in bed, keeping feet cosy etc...
Visted my podiatrist yesterday and they are going to make me some
thermal heat retracting/retaining insoles.
I am to wear these inside of my shoes to keep my feet insulated.
The wonders of new technology eh?
My feet always go weird as soon as the colder weather kicks in plus
my BG levels stabilise more too.
In the warmer weather my BG levels are both erratic and unpredictable , yet feet are fine!
In the colder weather BG levels are good and my feet/neuropathy go wonky!
Anna.

I had exactly the same thing. So I went along to the doctors like a good diabetic. After being looked at very strangely when I described my symptoms. I was told its probably athletes foot. Now I thought this was on soft damp skin, like between toes, but no. Apparently its anywhere. So here I am 2 weeks into using cannosten cream still getting the itchy heel.
It drives me insane as it feels as if its deep in side my heel and no amount of scratching relieves it for long.
I might add I'm now on gliclazide 40mg a day, but about to go on to byetta due to weight gain while on the gliclazide. I was unable to take metformin, so hopefully this will be better.
