Hello everyone

Having recently joined this forum I thought I'd introduce myself. I've had T2 for 29 years. I had problems with my eyes several years ago which meant injections in one eye. Last one November 2019. All was going well until about a year ago when I started having problems with my vision. As this probably seems to be my diet I have recently tried to cut back on carbs. My last HBA1C in October was 55 (7,2). My nurse recently suggested half my diet should be vegetables and fruit and a quarter Carbs. I'm trying that and on the whole my own readings have (fingers crossed) improved. Next HBA1C due in May. I hope for a much improved result this time and improvements to my sight.

One thing I'm not sure about read online (think it was an (American site) it said not to count NON starchy vegetables in the carb count. Is this the same in the UK. Looking forward to hearing your comments.

Just look at nett carbs, which in the Uk will be listed as Carbohydrates, i personally would go a lot lower than 25% of diet being carbs. Use fats and protein to ensure satiation and bulk meals with low carb vegs. Diabetic nurses ideas of low carb differ somewhat to most on here.

Hello ajbod

Thanks for your reply. Will try to do my best to get my carbs lower. When you said fats to bulk meals what did you have in mind?

Butter, cream, cheese, the fat off meat as it comes, lard and dripping, and proper olive oil. don't touch vegetable oils with a barge pole, they're pure evil.
If you have a salad full fat mayo, or drizzle olive oil, even melted butter goes rather well as a dressing.

I agree that you probably need to cut carbs more to achieve the best results.
Apart from filling up on good quality fats instead of carbs cut back on fruit. I have a few berries, usually in full fat Greek yogurt, or rhubarb, and then lemon juice on fish or chicken.
I might eat half a small orange, apple, or grapefruit, as a change.
I loved tropical fruit but that is very high carb,
I eat extra green veg or green salad items instead, plus loads of cauliflower served as 'rice' or mashed instead of potato.

Welcome @BPR As a type 1 I do not count non starchy veg in the carb count for the purposes of injecting insulin. I expect type 2s would probably count them.
