Hello
I have been a diet controlled diabetic for last 5 years but am getting worse my level yesterday was 8.5 and doctor has put me on januvia, I have no idea about this pill about the dos and fonts, interactions, whether I should be taking my own sugar readings and I'm scaring myself reading side effects like upper respiratory problems infections being very common and pancreatitis.. Anyone have any info for me please

Hi yeah I take Januvia for RH.
The drug does have a very low number of side effects. I have experienced none.
I would recommend you try it and yes you need to test. Get a meter. Read about testing and the drug on this forum. I am unable to link you with threads etc. someone kind enough will do it for you.
Also read about low carbing as this will slowly lose you weight and get your blood glucose levels down.
Let us know how you get on.
Remember every drug has side effects, this one is I believe minimal.
 
Hi. I was on Januvia for 2 years with no problems. It works by supressing an enzyme that in turn switches the pancreas islet cells off after a meal. This means you get insulin for longer. I had no problems other than slight headache in the first week. It appears to have very few side effects apart from one or two serious ones such as pancreatitis in very few people. Januvia will be of little help if you are overweight and insulin resistant as it will just add more insulin to a body having too much already; Metformin is then the drug of first choice for many. Diet, as always, is key.
 
I was on Januvia for a short period (about two months) without any problems. It was very effective in getting my sugars under control. However I did ask yo go on Metformin only ( one of the two active substances in Januvia, the other being sitagliptin). Metformin is an "old" medicine with s known history of being safe. Sitagliptin is much newer and I preferred not to take s chance with it if I could manage without. There is a rumored additional benefit to Sutaglyptin as it is claimed to protect beta cells from further deterioration, but I am not sure if this claim has been proven.

A diabetic friend has been on januvia for about three years now, with no adverse side effects.

Hi. A small correction. Januvia only contains Sitagliptin. It's Janumet that includes both Sitagliptin and Metformin.
 
I was put onto Janvia when my BG rose to 7.2 after I started taking Statins which I had to come off of after awhile because they disagreed with me. I had no problems with it and it worked to the extent that my last HBA1C was 40 so I came off the Janvia as well - I will find out in December whether or not it was the Statins that raised my BG and if I can stay off it.
