Januvia worries

I'd talk to your Dr, there are other meds you can take if you have headaches and you are concerned, it's a matter of finding one that you are ok with.

Hi and welcome.

I have been taking Januvia for well over a year now and do not have any side effects except for appetite suppression.
There is a very, very, very low risk of pancreatitis.
You are more likely to get it if you didn't take the meds.
Do not worry about them they are making sure you produce more insulin and reduce glucagon in your bloodstream. Keeping you more in control.
The headaches are more than likely like a hangover and your body is adjusting to lower blood sugar levels.

Hi,
I was on Januvia, for about a year or so.
I had no side effects, (in fact I had headaches caused by the high BG, this cleared up after a while)

Pancreatitis is something that can be tested for early indications of, so ask your doctor.
If I remember, I was screened at 3 months in.

I did improve my insulin resistance enough to come off the Januvia entirely last month though.

You have to find a diet that suits you, and you'll stick to, while 'eating to your meter'.
I found losing weight myself greatly improved my insulin resistance.

Hi. I was on Januvia for 2 years and the only side effect was a headache in the first 2 weeks. Yes, there is small risk of serious pancreatitis so you need to wtach out for any symptoms. Januvia works by suppressing a DPP-4 enzyme that in turn suppresses extended insulin production after a meal. It therefore allows the pancreas to produce more insulin. As your blood sugar comes down to near normal it's effect is reduced so it doesn't cause hypos and is good to reduce spikes. As Jack says there is another similar drug group called the GLP-1. I'm afraid your nurse is completely wrong to say you should have plenty of carbs (unless you want to make your diabetes worse). This is out of date training they had based on no valid evidence over the last 20-30 years. If you reduce your carbs you will lose weight and your blood sugar will go down. I suspect you won't then need the Januvia. Do come back in the near future and let us know how you are getting on.

I have found that just low carbing and having full fat rather than high fat has worked for me. Also plate size is important. If you follow the recipes and tips on lots of threads on the forum, read up and learn what you can eat and what to avoid.
Control is the key.
There are some wonderful things you can eat without raising your blood sugars.

There comes a point when even low carbs don't work. It's happening to me now. It's a progressive disease unfortunately.
