Just back from America

Hi Everyone

Got back from America yesterday having had a wonderful holiday! Took a day or so to suss out food options but thanks to all your great advice we got it sorted. My non meat-eating son was more difficult than me but after investing in some raisins and cashews even he was happy - if we went anywhere where options were limited we just threw the extras into a garden salad for him.

Arrived in New York at the start of a heatwave - 40C - and was in the high 30s for most of the time. I didn't test and know I made a few bad choices but overall was pretty sensible and we did a lot of walking (we even climbed a mountain - or the last mile or so ayway). We experienced a really bad storm in Washington DC that caused power 'outages' but thankfully our hotel was out for less than a day. The worst food was probably the hotel buffet in Washington and the BA meal on the flight there - carbohydrate overload.

Anyway, result of holiday - lost 5lbs and pre-meal BGs now running mid to high 5s rather than the 6s I was seeing before the holiday. Hoping this and the weight loss will continue.

Thanks again

Dawn

Wow, a wonderful holiday and a weight loss and a reduction in readings. Fabulous!
You did mention to your family that you would have to go more often because it did you so much good I hope

I love NY. I love DC. I love America (most of it).

I got caught in the same electrical storm as it whipped through Ohio last week, scary wasn't it?

I always get a packed lunch from Ramsey's Plane Food in T5, and don't chance the BA meals (which are junk).

I'm off to California next month. It is blistering in CA at the moment, and friends are longing for winter.

So pleased you had a great time, that's something the USofA will rarely fail to deliver.

Don't think we'll get back anytime soon, unfortunately, as twins hopefully off to uni in September (and we'll have to help support them). However, husband looking forward to having more of my time and lots of weekends away planned!

Storm was very scary. Our rooms were on the 9th floor and we could feel the building move! All the pool furniture ended in the pool and we had to use the stairs to get down for a breakfast we weren't even sure they would be able to provide (and back up again). Spent the day in DC and power was back on when we got back to hotel. Glad I'd lost some weight and got a bit fitter before we went - wouldn't have coped with the heat otherwise. The one thing we'd hoped to do and couldn't because of the storm was a visit to Great Falls Park. There were fires in the Blue Ridge Mountains but that didn't stop our trip to Shenandoah.

I'd never taken a long haul flight before so had no experience of airline food but if there is a next time I'll be better prepared!

I can almost understand your friends looking forward to winter, Jo but presume they're more used to these temperatures than we are? Hope you have a wonderful time in California and remember to keep drinking - even more than you usually do. Had one day at least where I'd sweated out everything I'd drunk!
