i have read a lot on here about doctors attitude to type 2 but had the experience first hand today
i had my second blood test for confirmation of diabetes and went to see the doctor as when i phoned the receptionist they said it was normal i said normal for a diabetic or non diabetic they said you better ask the doctor hence the appointment it went something like this:-
morning doctor
morning
pregnant pause as he tried to remember who i was(saw him 8 days before)
i am here for my blood results
oh yes yes yes you have diabetes a reading of 9 for fasting bgl,i put you on medicine didn't i...are you taking them?
yes 2 a day with not too much reaction
good good i am increasing your dosage
erm well do you not want to know what my random tests have been first
oh yes we have given you a machine haven,t we?
yes and i have been testing to find the foods which give meek spikes and what works for me testing before and after food
WHAT who told you to do this no no no no you only test twice a week in the morning before breakfast you will only cause yourself stress, who told you to do this!! have you been getting medical advice elsewhere?
no but i have spoken with type 2,s and they believe this is good practice and don't you think
it would be a good idea to find out how food affects me once i know i can reduce the testing anyway i need another pot of test strips
(face screwed up like a bull dog chewing a wasp)well i will this time but only two a week understand
so you want me to do it every morning(bit of a wind up)
no no twice a week you understand twice a week write the results down and come and see me in 6 weeks with the readings
oh ok
during the course of this he forgot to increase my meds so i guess a bit of a result
my readings are now 6.9 pre breakfast 6.4 2h later 6.2 pre dinner 6.3 2h later 6.7 before evening meal 6.9 after 5.9 before bed i think this is not too bad after two weeks low carbs and exercise as well as meds i think this can only get better but appreciate your comments do i need higher meds?

Hi, don't worry to much about the doctors, they have so much on, the nurse that is at my doctors is so much better at all the things related to diabetes, best thing about the whole place.
Regards Derek.

Hi, Shirederby,

Your readings aren't too bad for a newly diagnosed diabetic, and if I was you I would stick to what you're doing, on your present meds (I assume you are on Metformin?). Keep testing, give it six months, and see how you're doing. Have you had an HbA1c test? Those are very good for comparison of how you're doing.

I'm on Metformin to help with weight loss, as well as the protection against CVD etc it gives, as I won't take statins.

Low-carb is great for many of us, and there's lots of advice, hints and recipes on here. You can allow yourself some treats over Christmas, it's interesting to see what affects you - one mince pie took me over 11 last year - highest I've ever been!

Let us know how you go on.

PS of course if your readings go up, consistently, see the GP again. Don't worry unduly if your a.m. fasting readings are the highest - Dawn Phenomenon.
