Just came off Metaformin, worried.

HI all!
Bit of back ground first.
I was diagnosed with type 2 late September last year along with high blood pressure, was instantly put on 1000mg of Metaformin + blood pressure meds.

I have since had a complete lifestyle change, exercise, diet etc, losing over 30kg and lowering my blood sugar enough to have my dosage of Metaformin reduced to 500mg.

My readings have been consistently below 5.0 for over 2 months and I've been getting dizzy and feeling hungry all the time, I went to the docs after passing out one morning and he suggested I come off Metaformin altogether.

At first my readings remained as before but now a week later they are starting to creep up, I got a 5.3 this morning which is my highest fasting reading in a while.

Should I be worried? Do I need to start back on the meds?

Sorry for the long read!

5.3 is fine. I would love a 5.3 every morning! Just keep a check on it so that it doesn't keep rising.

Oh and welcome to the forum. :)

Hi @VinceVolauvent_

Wow!! What a great job you have done. They are such great results. Don't worry about the meds it is something you should celebrate. 5.3 is well within the normal range.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum

Well done :) and yes, your doc did the right thing taking you off metformin as your sugar levels were obviously going too low. My endo wants me to stay above 5 at all times. He says it is important to know your 'safe' number which he said for me is 5 because once I get to 5 I can drop very quickly and it only takes .5 of a drop in BGL for me to start to hypo (any figure 4.5 or less for me). So you're doing very well. 5.3 is a very good number and nothing to worry about as its normal.

I agree with the others. 5.3 is great, but don't just try for getting lower and lower, that way is dangerous and you will feel dizzy. Keeping around the 5s seems fine to me.

I believe our own bodies know where our base levels should be, and without any meds to interfere with this, our livers will try to keep us at those levels. Well done, you are doing brilliantly, and I am one that would love to see a 5.3 in a morning. Anything under 6 is a perfectly normal non-diabetic level.

Really well done on all those positive changes to your health. You should be very happy.

As the others have said, your fasting readings remain fine. Whilst Metformin doesn't make a huge difference to blood scores, some find when they come off it their numbers go up a fraction (as your appear to have). For some people, they remain at the new level (and to repeat, your most recent numbers are still fine), but for some, once their bodies get used to being off Metformin, their numbers trim back a bit. Frustratingly, I'm sure, you'll just have to wait and see which camp you fall into.

On another front; are you still on your BP meds? Some folks find they can go, over time too. Fingers crossed for you, and welcome aboard.

Thank you all for the advice and kind words, been having a bit of a flap about it but now feel a lot better. Thank you! :)
