Went to the doctors following a Phone call, (I had recently had 2 blood tests) sat down with a nurse I'd never met she said "so what are we going to do about your diabetes" I nearly fell through the floor, :o
I am 48, 20 stone, height 5 10, fasting blood readings of 11.8 and 13.2. No history of diabetes in the family, given Metformin 1x500mg (sr) after main meal for first 2 weeks then 2x500 Given a load of leaflets told to come back in 2 months.
I hope other people’s experience of being told they had this life changing condition was better than mine. Don't get me wrong I am happy I know. I realise this is a condition of my own making I blame no one
But to get to my questions,
1) how long before Metformin is effective, my blood sugar level is all over the place when following the test guidance in Diabetes UK book (which is very good) before / after meals :?
2) Is Metformin available as a free prescription? (I pay for my medication) I have read that Drugs for the treatment of diabetes can be issued a prescription exemption certificate by completing form FP92A from your doctor's surgery. :?

As a Diabetic on medication ALL your prescriptions will in future be free. You are right in saying that you need a Prescription ExemptionCertificate by getting the form signed by your GP and sent off. That's all there is too it.
