Hi. I have just been diagnosed with possibly prediabetes and will be referred to the diabetic team. My doctor seemed very ‘blasé’ about it. Said we’d check again in 1 year!
I initially went to see doctor due to a digestive issue - constipation with floaty, greasy poop (apologies for details). AND a very strong heartbeat - BP and Pulse very good.
She recommended blood tests.
My good cholesterol was high 8 and my bad cholesterol was a bit high too. I am going back to the surgery to get exact numbers after Easter.
I had been following a semi keto / intermittent fasting diet for about 7 weeks (prior to tests).
I had lost weight, sleeping well, tracking my macros for nutrition.
I had cut out alcohol, sugar, processed foods, grains, and most fruits - apart from berries.
I was looking after my gut biome by having fermented foods.
I want to get a meter so I can get to the bottom of this myself.
I was very surprised at the results of the tests. However, I do have a sister and brother (I am one of 9!) that both have type 2.
Any advice on the above would be welcome.
Thank you

The HbA1c measures how much glucose has stuck to your blood cells throughout their life of around 12 weeks.
Your 7 weeks of keto and intermittent fasting will certainly have had a positive effect on your HbA1c number.
Without the changes to your diet, I suspect that your HbA1c would have been much higher and you would have joined your siblings in the T2 club. Congratulations for dodging that bullet
Stick with the keto/low carb and your next test should see you back into normal numbers, getting a meter and checking how you respond to different foods is a great idea.

Oh wow! That freaks me out a bit, but I am so glad to hear that. I am so glad I found this forum as most of the 'information' supports what I have been doing in terms of trying to live a healthier life. I am coming up to 66 and in general am in very good health. Fingers crossed I will get this under control. I did read a statement that if you've been diagnosed as 'prediabetes' consider yourself one of the lucky ones as there are so many people that don't even know and continue on with their 'unhealthy' lifestyle - none the wiser. So, I am grateful and I am sure with the support of this forum I will conquer this.

I think when anyone is diagnosed pre diabetic, that is the time real emphasis should be on education, and loads of proper information. It is the chance to avoid diabetes, and health care professionals should push for that. Sadly like in my own case, it's almost an after thought with no information whatsoever, and until you tip over into full diabetes, it's given an impression of irrelevance by ,many HCPs.
