Posted only a couple times here, quick background, I was diagnosed with T1D about 3 months ago. Im now suffering with severe neuropathy, where I can barely sleep at night without waking up every hour.

Main question is, (I know its only been 3 months) but ive been in so much pain, that I cant eat. Before anyone else that has been daignosed, how long did it take where you got your glucose under control and really havent struggled. At this point im hurting so bad and my DRs cant help with my neuropathy. Im struggling to eat and sleep, since Ive been diagnosed ive lossed 30lbs in 4weeks (have mind u, I originally weighed 120lbs) so under 90 isnt the healthiest.

I guess all im asking is a piece of mind how long the struggle will be, before I can start feeling better?

took me a several weeks of injecting insulin before blood glucose levels started to stablise alongside several adjustments to both basal/bolus rates. sorry to hear that your struggling to eat and sleep. Have you been given any pain meds? something along the lines of gabapentin/pregablin might assist will most likely be worth asking for a referal to pain management clinic. if you've not partook in diabetes education course - ask your DSN about DAFNE or other courses that they could possibly offer.

best wishes.

yes, my Dr prescribed me gabapentin when I first told her that the pain was occuring. I was orginally on 100MG-300MG for the first week, and told her it wasnt working. She upped my dose to 300-900mgs for two more weeks to see if it worked. And still no progress. I told her it wasnt working so i wanted to stop using it.

All in all, meds/creams/oils havent beemln working.

pain management clinic have the ability to prescribe something a little stronger. i note that you were on a fairly high dosage of gabapentin pregablin would normally be the next step up. Have you considered trying out a TENS machine they are relatively cheap (those can also also be prescibed) to act as a distraction technique ?

if the only reason was that it wasnt working to help at least ease the pain, a coktail with other drugs could have a larger impact. in your shoes i would ask for a referral to pain management clinic. i have another question regards up every hour or so is this only due to pain or if your peeing at the same time?

Im not familiar with a TENS machine, i may have to look into that. Or if you can guide me to somewhere, that would be very helpful.

Every hour would be because the pain would wake me up from my sleep. It would be on rare occasion that its a bathroom break.

it wouldnt really help with sleep time as would be bad idea to leave it on overnight. daytime would assist a lot and effect can last for a few hours afterwards.

boots and other chemists usually sell them. they can be prescibed by both dr's surgery alongside pain management clinics will give them out. they work by interupting the nerves sending mini electrical shocks (not sore) try start about eigth way up theres a frequencey alongside power a setting where you can feel it sorta vibrate without being painful is what your after for using one.

the following links are in no particular order plently options are available to try at various costs, i used one which cost twenty quid for a while before nhs provided a replacement.

info below from nhs website which explains what tens is:

Just as a random thought, when did the pain start, was it shortly after starting the insulin - if so maybe you're just having a really bad reaction to whatever insulin you're currently on (I know at a DAPHNE course I went on, one of the guys was having huge problems with exhaustion and it was the basal insulin, they changed his basal and he felt so much more alive - I realise exhaustion is not the same as pain., but just a thought, could it be the insulin disagreeing with you - there are numerous types available)

Obviously it could well be neuropathy, but I always thought it took a lot longer than a couple of months to get to a really bad state - obviously though I could be wrong

yes, the pain started shortly after starting the insulin. I wasnt even aware that there are differeng types of insulin. Im currently on the humolog kwikpen for my bolus, and on lantus solostar.

Thats an interesting thought, i just might have to look into other insulins
