Hi I am currently in NZ working and intend returning to the UK in March to live and be with my family. I have family outside of London but open to where I find work. I may spend a few weeks with family and then move to where I can find a job. I have just been diagonised with Type 2 and take Metformin. In the past I have registered with the NHS local area for a dr only when I've been sick (like bad flu etc). I don't know how diabetes is dealt with by NHS in the Uk for example in NZ I got a free meter and get a prescription for a month worth of testing strips for free or about 2 pounds if I go to a chemist different from my normal one. I would really love some advice about what to do?

I assume you are a UK citizen returning to the UK to live?

If so all treatment should be free including prescribed diabetic medications but maybe not test strips etc., that's a post code lottery it seems, I can't get any strips on prescription. If you are a non UK citizen then different rules apply and only emergency treatment might be covered under the "Reciprocal Agreement", it depends on your visa length etc. The NZ Embassy will know about this.

My relatives keep leaving for NZ, they all find it a better place to live and work :D

Hi

Yes I am a UK National. I guess I will have to register as a temporary person for NHS purposes while I look for a job. My BGL always go really high when I'm stressed so i just want to have someone to touch base with whilst job hunting. I guess for me is that you have different meters than what we have ( we now just have an option of a caresens one). I'm travelling back in March but I have to work out what to do about diabetes medication while flying etc.

NZ is a lovely place to live but I guess with being newly diagonised I want to be in the same country as most of my family
