Hello, so I'm very new to this site, this is my first post!
I have recently found out I'm pregnant ( Friday!!) it still all feels surreal! Me and my partner are over the moon, however I am already struggling to control my blood sugar! I'm testing all the time, and have been carb counting I just don't know why there so irratic! I'm eating the right food and nothing to sugary! I'm getting really upset when there high as I'm worried im causing damage to the baby!
Any advice on how people have gained control in the past would be great!
Thanks x

Congratulations!!! Dont know much about it. I was gestational diabetic. now T2. Think someone will be along to help out more soon. Are you T1 or T2? Medication? Best thing is probably speak to doc in morning. Good luck x

I'm type 1, and have been for about 10 years now!
I'm expecting a phone call in the morning so hopefully she can help ☺️

Congratulations on your great news, an early Christmas present.
I'm no expert on Gestational diabetes and as far as I was aware it is normally checked for in the later stages of the pregnancy, where if it's left uncontrolled, it can result in a high birth weight and increased risk to both the mother and baby. When Gestational Diabetes is discovered (sometimes they do a GTT) various diabetic medications including insulin are commonly administered.
In these early weeks of your current pregnancy as with all expectant mothers, it is important to take folic acid, and in your case being a Type 1 diabetic you will need to monitor your BG levels as you will have already become accustomed to. It will be made harder to control due to the changes that are occurring to your body as the hormone levels change, but in these early weeks having a slightly raised B/G level should do no real harm to the developing infant as the glucose levels will then go to support yourself as well as aiding the developing foetus.
Eat well during the pregnancy, with as many varied food items as you can, your now eating for two in effect. You will find that towards the 2'nd trimester the medical professionals will then concentrate more so on both your diet and blood/glucose levels, trying to stabilize your B/G levels to 'Normal' safe long term levels.

Best wishes for the future

Hi Madeline

congrats on your wonderful news!

There's a pregnancy forum on here which is full of useful info - have a look on there.

Hey Madeline .

Congratulations on your pregnancy exciting times but also very nerve racking too right ? With trying to balance everything and get everything with in targets . I'm type 1 diabetic too and have been for 15 years now , I'm 22 and currently 17 weeks pregnant with my first baby .

How did your phone call go this morning I think I remember reading above ? Did they give you any advice on what steps to take next .

The main points I can think of are to start taking the higher dose of folic acid if you are not already doing so . And to be booked under the hospital diabetic team now that you are pregnant , you might have already done this though ( sorry if you have ) .
The diabetes teams at the hospitals are amazing , tell you everything you need to know and they help you every step of the way , answering any questions and also changing insulin aswell to help you manage the control .
Are you on injections or the pump , I can't really comment on how to get the good readings they say it can be different one day to the next and have to just try and go along with the changes by all means it can be hard , and is worrying when you see the high we all get them try not to worry as much as it's the long term highs that cause the damage so if your getting them down with in a reasonable time then that's brilliant .
What was your latest hba1c ?
Not much help but always about if you ever need to chat .
Take care and best wishes throughout your pregnancy

Hi Madeleine,

Congratulations on your pregnancy I'm also type 1 and 17 week's pregnant. Your levels will be erratic in the first trimester and its due to the hormones etc. Try not to worry. This is my 2nd pregnancy with diabetes and it can be an absolute pain with all the testing etc., but so worth it. I was 25 when I had my first child and she is a healthy 5 year old. My best advice is to take all the help and advice offered to you, never miss appointments and test, test, test and you'll get there xxx

There is also a great page on Facebook called Type 1 and Pregnant and its full of advice from other women who are in the exact same boat as you. I find the page very helpful!!

Congratulations to all you ladies who are pregnant. I am sure you will be well looked after by your medical team and they will tell you all you need to know about diet etc so follow their advice and just try to enjoy your pregnancy

Congratulations, that's lovely news. Everyone has given some great advice and just try not to stress out too much. I had my daughter 14 years ago, aged 42 and type 1 for eleven years then. Just keep testing your BS, there will be times when you may need a tiny amount of Insulin, then it changes and much more may be required.
Enjoy your pregnancy and look forward to that wonderful time when you hold your baby for the first time.

I wish the internet was around when I was pregnant, it would of been great to 'talk' to others in the same position, especially a forum like this one :) ( I didn't have a computer until 3 years ago)

Good luck, all the best and take good care
Best wishes RRB

Thank you everyone for the support its so nice to be able to talk to people who are in the same situation or are going though it ☺️

Im 22 as well choe-1992, my current hba1c is 7.8 so it's not horrendous but could be a little lower! Well I'm expecting a phone call after 4, but nothing yet! Iv has 3 hypos today!!
When do you normally have your first scan??
Thanks everyone ☺️

Oh brilliant , have to keep in contact through out the pregnancies :p
Oh blimey yeah that's a good hba1c , not that bad at all , oh no lol long wait Untill four o clock during the day then even worse when it gets passed four o clock and you still haven't heard , hopefully they call soon so you haven't got to wait much longer .
I experienced hypos during the first trimester too i had to lower a lot of my insulin ratios and background too , but to be fair even at 17 weeks I'm still experiencing them not having half as many but it's still enough lol .
You should get sent for a scan around 8 weeks , basically just to make sure everything is in place and doing what it should be , you don't see a great deal but it's still amazing :)

Yes we shall defiantly have to keep in contact ☺️ it will be nice to go through it together!
Iv heard back from the diabetic clinic and I have an appointment tomorrow at 5! I'm so happy they can fit me in as i have so many questions!
I'm so excited about it all, but I don't want to get over excited as I'm scared something could go wrong! Xx

Yeah definitely especially being the same age will be good .
Oh wow that's brilliant that it's so quick is it at your local hospital . I don't think that feeling is ever going to go away Untill baby is here , I still think like that now or that might just be me I don't know haha

I'd never ever tell any one what to do so don't want this to come across that way lol , but I had all these questions to ask and when you get there it's all so overwhelming and like wow I forgot half of what I wanted to ask them , luckily me and my partner sat down the night before and wrote everything down we wanted to ask so wouldn't go home thinking **** was meant to ask that question and forgot lol .

Let us know how you get on tomorrow and loads of good luck wishes :)
