Hi

I was diagnosed with Type 2 in 2001 and am still controlling diabetes with diet and exercise, though i know it is only a matter of time before i have to go onto medication/insulin. I try to keep to a low GI diet as much as possible. Luckily i love lots of vegetables, but also very dark chocolate. For exercise i walk everywhere i can and have dancing classes.
:)

Hi all

Adrian - walk the dog as far as you can and find new walks - it was brilliant for me. I live in a rural area in NE England - last year discovered all sorts of wildlife I never knew existed here - just because the dog became my best excuse for exercise. Wife told me off for walking the poor beast too far.

I would recommend that the best book - by far - that I found is "diabetes for dummies". Reassuring that one of my kids was confused as to why I would buy a book for dummies - at least she didn't think I was one - my lad could see the link straight away!!!

BTW - I have told very few people of my diagnosis of type 2 - the one thing that would drive me up the wall is a load of folk telling me what I could or couldn't eat or what I should / shouldn't be doing.

Anyway - best of luck.

Hello Sandy,

Is it inevitable that you will end up on medicine? i have been diagnosed for 2 years and not had to take any although my doctor seems to think i will have to in the future, it doesn't bother me but i do read some diabetics have never needed medicine?????
Does anyone have an answer ?????

All the best
Albert

Adey, all is far from lost, look at everyone who's been posting on here. I'm sure none of us was particularly joyous about being diagnosed but it's a manageable problem and as long as you're diligent and take care of yourself it will not get in the way of doing anything you want. I've worked night shifts and my blood sugar's been fine and I'm starting up my own business soon too; no problems, don't panic, as is often said: knowledge is the key.
