Hi all, have just had the worst week of my life that began with me having a stroke! Luckily i was in the right place at the right time (work in a hospital). They think the stroke was caused by high bm's because my HbA1 was 9.9. At the time of my stroke bm was 20.8 and bp 255/145!!!!! Bp now back under control but sugars not really. Have started novomix 30 and currently have 24 at brekkie and 26 teatime and still sugars 10-13 plus i have 2gms metformin BD. Any advice would be greatly received as a tad scared!!!!

Oh my god, that's terrible, I hope you have a lot of close friends and family to support you.

I'm going to be 35 next week, so this really saddens me.

I'm so sorry but as a recently diagnosed as slow onset type 1 , I can't even make any suggestions re your situation. We can't give advice anyway but hopefully someone will be able to shed further light regarding your current insulin regime and high sugars etc.

Sending Hugs!! I'm a recently diagnosed type 1 and I'm 36 and the thought of a stroke happening is always at the back of my mind as I lost my Mum to a subarachnoid Bleed at 41 and is certainly terrifying so you've certainly had a terrible time of late! :(
There are a few members here who have suffered strokes at an early age and hopefully one of them will be able to share experiences with you and support you!
I hope things improve for you real soon!

My heartfelt best wishes

Paul

Hi Naomi so sorry to hear of your stroke. I wish you well and hope your situation improves very soon. With very best wishes.

Naomi - thats terrible, I am so sorry
Like everyone else here, I hope that you get better very soon and that you can achieve better control of your diabetes. There are a few members in the forum who have been unfortunate to suffer a stroke but thankfully have been able to fight back to good health. I hope they will be along soon to offer their support and advice, but please remember its weekend so it is a bit quiet around here.

I hope you have family and friends to support you, you are probably still in a state of disbelief and will feel uneasy about it all, talk about things if you need to, dont hold back, its ok to feel sorry for yourself. But try and stay positive, you can move on from here and it will all be better.

Sending you hugs, dont feel alone.
Thinking of you

Hi Naomi

I had a stroke too, caused by high sugar levels which was in fact undiagnosed diabetes. I was 53 when I had my stroke last year, but it was a hell of a shock, but a major incentive to bring my sugars under control.

I was put on an anti-clotting drug and a statin, both of which I still take.

I found this board before I was seen by the diabetic nurse and immediately started to cut back on carbs. I don't eat bread, pasta, rice or potatoes and my levels came down really quite quickly. I lost 5.5 stone which also helped reduce my sugar levels and I'm now thinner and healthier than I have been for over 30 years.

My stroke happened on a plane during a long haul flight and a major contributory factor to my high sugar levels was stress and tiredness, so I had to do some major re-evaluations in my life to reduce stress.

My stroke was really scary, because I never in a million years thought I would have one, but it was also a major incentive to bring my levels under control to avoid another one.

I was very lucky and I hope you have been as well. The damage caused by my stroke is still there, but it is copeable with. My left side is affected, but I don't let it stop me doing anything. One thing I discovered is what a stubborn determined person I am and that is no bad thing.

Hi Naomi!

That's a terrible thing to happen to you. Diabetes has many complications and your story certainly reinforces that. You cannot change what has happened, but you can change your future health prospects by managing your diabetes tightly and reducing the chances of further complications. The quickest way to bring down blood glucose for many of us is to seriously cut down on carbs. I have cut out rice, pasta and bread completely and cut down drastically on potato and cereal. However, discuss any change of diet with your diabetes team as your Novomix 30 dose will have been worked out on the basis of a set amount of carb.

I'm not going to explain different types of diabetes, tests you might want or different insulin regimes to you at the moment, as you already have so much goign on and you are clearly worried. When you are ready for more information, just ask and I, or other members will be along to help.

Take care

Hi

I hope that your stroke was not major and its effects few. Your control of BS and BP will need to be tight to help ensure that you do not have any further strokes. Along with others, I will be thinking good thoughts for you.

Take care

Doug

Hello Naomi

I'm 42 and suffered a TIA in March this year, then a 2nd within a few days. Scans showed I'd actually suffered 12! I'm 42 years old.

Prior to this I'd gone to the Drs several times saying I felt ill, was thirsty all the time, weeing a lot and was always tired.

While ill in hospital, my sugar levels were high but nurses said that was expected as I was ill.

It wasn't until I saw the consultant he said in his opinion I was diabetic. (I have very strong family history of diabetes).

My problem is my GP. He has decided to disagree with the consultant and wont give me the treatment the consultant has asked for.

People on here told me to insist on tests with Gp which I have. Results are in but I've been called in this Wednesday for them, but funnily enough not to see the GP but the 'diabetes nurse' !

I had tested my own blood when I got to drs and it was 6.9 on fasting and nearly 3 hrs after the glucose drink on my machine I was 10.1 but don't know how accurate home machines are.

I'll let you know the outcome :)

I had 6 weeks off work following the TIA's and it's been a struggle. I've suffered extreme tiredness since. I've also just been diagnosed with the 2nd stage of fatty liver disease.

A lifestyle change is needed I know but without a supportive Gp I feel very alone and a bit scared.

I hope you continue with a good recovery :)

Since you didn't mention it in you post, I must ask how much do you weigh and do you smoke? If you're heavy, the best thing you can do to eliminate the high blood pressure, cure your diabetes and prevent further strokes is get down to a normal weight. A stroke at such a young age is very unusual and you must have some other risk factors at play - try treating the root causes and the symptoms will take care of themselves.

Also, check out The Last Heart Attack ( http://sanjayguptamd.blogs.cnn.com/2011/08/29/sanjay-gupta-reports-the-last-heart-attack/ ) and Forks Over Knives ( http://www.forksoverknives.com/ - available for streaming on Netflix too ).

I wish you good health,
