Just had my diagnosis changed..

Good morning all

I have just had my diagnosis changed from type 2 to type 1 following a positive gad test. The question is have is :

How many of you type 1s are under a hospital team and how many are just under the GP?
 
I'm under the hospital where I currently live.

Previously I've mainly been under hospital consultants but did have 1-2 years under a GP at one place I lived. I much prefer being under consultants, GPs don't often 'get' diabetes.

I'm under a hospital team and always have been. I wouldn't be happy if my GP provided all my care.

I'm Type 1 and have a pump.
 
See given that it's taken 3 years of me telling them I can't control my diabetes, levels creeping up etc that they begrudgingly sent me for the gad test! I'm not overly confident in their care also was told I didn't need to carb count when I was put on insulin and it was a specialist type 1 thing :/
 
Hospital team too, like alaska I was switched back to the care of my gp clinic once before but asked to be referred back to the hospital team when I had a few insulin related issues, IMHO the expertise that you get in a hospital diabetes clinic could never be matched in a gp surgery.
 
Thanks guys. I will just have to keep asking, been refused today for a referal when I went in to be told I'm type 1. She said hospital clinics are only for diabetics with poor control or complications which is rubbish!! Don't need to see an Endo or anything she said just my annual review at the GP surgery
 
No you should be under the hospital for sure. Sorry for diagnosis, but welcome to the club x
 
Tell them you want to talk to them about a pump. Even if you don't want one, your GP will have to refer you then
 
I am under my hospital for main diabetes care and also see my DSN at GP surgery.

I've never heard that before. I don't have poor control and I see a consultant annually. It used to be more frequently, but was reduced as I was managing ok.

I'm trying not to get angry on your behalf. I don't understand why you can't see a proper hospital team.

And yes, why not ask about a pump? That might be useful...
 
What amazes me with this, is that if you were having issues with high blood glucose or even illness is that the GP's generally don't know enough information to give you specialist advice and this could have a direct impact on your health !!

You have patients rights to demand the right care, I think sometimes you have to be very firm with them.

I can recall 3 instances now when I've seen a GP over my type 1 and the information they have given me has been inadequate information and in 1 case I sat down with the GP to explain how I manage my care, because as he said to me I knew more about it than him ! My diabetic consultant on the other hand is like a text book of information and knows exactly how and what I need to do to help me.

I've been Type1 for over53 years and been under the hospital from day 1.
 
See I'm genuinely concerned about the care I'm getting. I had a high level (over 31.5 as my meter.just displayed HI ) and because this was before the gad test.they had me as.type 2 and told me I didn't need to test for keytones as 'that's only type 1' luckily I sourced a blood keytone monitor and the next time I felt rough I tested and I was 1.5! I just don't trust my care at the gps
 
I was told I was type 2 for 2 years gp refused to give me a meter had to keep nagging to get 1 and when i did only then did i get referred to a specialist who said I am type 1 My consultant makes changes to my treatment but the gp surgery take it upon them self to change my insulin needles from bd micro fine to tricare they are **** and hurt and hard to screw back on hopefully my consultant wont be happy about it and change it back Jaxx01 reading your comment has made me feel angry Id be demanding to speak to the manager .
 
I am angry and sad it's taken me 3 years to get the diagbosus changed but I am in the process of writing a letter to the diabetes specialist at our local hospital to see if he can help me. Thanks all for your answers and support
 
I am not in the UK but i just have an endocrinologist that i see every 6 months or so.

I think the important this is that you are now a T1D, and have insulin to take. From this you can learn to count carbs by yourself, and you can pretty much figure everything else out by yourself.

Its not ideal but the information is readily available and you can learn and experiment - you don't NEED someone telling you what you have to do, you know what you have to do you just have to figure out how to do it.

This is a good thing! Keep trying to get the doctor/care you want, but know that you now have the tools and the information is available for you to learn pretty much everything.

You got this, everything is going to get so much better for you now
 
I think when a person gets to this point, where trust has been broken many times, and they have a significant medical condition that does need specialist input, and they keep getting refused, then it may be time to look for another GP. My understanding is that geographical restrictions can be overcome by involving the NHS office and telling them you have concerns.

I just wouldn't be able to trust a GP who treated me like this.
 
There's another way. If you get a reading like that, go to A & E, and when you see the doctor, tell them your GP won't refer you to the diabetic clinic. The A&E can refer you too, I believe.
