I normally inject 12 units when I wake up and 8 before bed... and I accidently just injected 12 before bed... is it going to make a massive difference? I just ate a bowl of cereal hoping this may help during the night?.. I tested at 8 just before injecting the levemir..

I have also injected the wrong amount before , I done what you have done had quiet a big snack and then set alarms to wake myself up every few hours to check that I wasn't dropping during the night even though I have good hypo awareness and would wake with a nighttime hypo I didn't want to risk it and had my hypo treatment at the ready .
I did end up dropping but obviously took a little while to drop being back ground insulin .

Do as @Cloe-1992 suggests and set your alarm to test your bg levels, if you find it's dropping low during the night then eat some more carbs.

It's an easy mistake to make and I'm sure many of us and have done something similar at some point. Hope you have a safe night.

The extra 4 units of long acting insulin have the potential to make your basal level go a bit low. To be sure what is happening set your alarm to wake up during the night and take a blood sugar reading. Have something at your bedside to boost your blood sugar levels if needed. Then reset your alarm to wake again and repeat. Just as @Cloe-1992 just said as I was writing this!

How many hours should I set it from now? .. and Thankyou! What a pain! x

if you think it through logically- you have had half too much insulin so you need a half too much food also for the duration of the insulin. Obviously you don't normally eat during the night so dont have a good ration to work from but I would eat plenty before bed and would blood test hourly before going to bed. 4am tends to be the low point so I would set alarm for 2.30 and 5 if it was me and like others have said have short acting and longer acting carbs and blood test meter by your bed. If you don't work and don't have to get up then I would do more myself but if you have a partner and someone that can check on you if you don't answer alarm then that will help..
Goodluck. Don't worry I am sure nearly all of us have done that at some point, I know my sister did 2 days ago but the other way round

It is such a big pain yet so easily done , After I had tested before I went to sleep I set an alarm to wake me up in 2 hours just to be on the safe side and went from there with my next bm x

I'm working tomorrow but I'll just have to be tired! Haha Thanks for your message

Levemir peaks about 3-4 hours in so I'd so around this time I would check, and yeah unfortunately you'll just have to gulp coffee tomorrow morning :p Also definitely keep some quick sugar near your bed.

I really feel for insulin users who have wake up every 2 hours sometimes. Hugs.

Just thought I'd mention that as a normal sleep cycle down into restorative REM sleep and back out again lasts about 90 minutes, 3 or 4 short spells of sleep can still be fairly good for you, as opposed to interrupting the sleep cycles (as tired as you do still feel the next day). A straight 8-9 hours sleeps is best of course but at least you get through 1.5-2 hours sleep a few times.

Careful with your statement. Without knowing the OPs body weight it's hard to say when to expect a peak. Whilst it is true that smaller doses per kg of body weight have an earlier peak, if the OP is less than 60kg, a 12u dose could push that out. I'll stick the graph in here later.

Thanks guys. Luckily nothing really happened.. I did wake up twice but it was all OK. I think the mountain of fruit and fibre cereal and the banana i forced down my throat before bed helped! It's a shame I wasn't hungry for any of it! :)

@LauraC27 Glad to hear all is OK.

In the hope that I could at least enjoy treating hypo symptoms I have a shelf full of delicious stuff to consume. When the opportunity to sample something from the shelf presents itself, do I enjoy eating it? Nah! Not at all. Everything tastes horrid.

Sorry, this is what my nurse had told me, so if you're less than 60kg the peak happens later on?
