Just so fed up

I am really finding it hard to keep my BS levels under control - all this checking, writing down what I eat, having to remember to check every two hours ... I have a very stressful, busy job which has got more stressful recently, and I am finding juggling both the diabetes and the job so difficult. Because I am not in control of my BS, I am tired all the time but am not sleeping, then getting up late and not finding time to prepare my meals ahead of time, so relying on a sandwich which is the worst thing I could do ... it's all out of control, and I am turning in circles and don't know how to get a hold of it. Any constructive advice would be most welcome.

Hi nanno,
Sorry you are finding it such a drag.
The secret is to balance and put things in order of priority. I am assuming that you don't work 7 days per week?
On your days off do a meal planner for the week ahead and stick to it. You can do your calculations for the food involved at the same time. Some things can be prepared in advance and frozen. Make time to relax every day, it need not be at the same time but just make sure that it happens. 20 minutes used to unwind is worth hours in the grand scheme of things. Switch off your mobile, kick off your shoes and go for it. Housework need only mean the basics until you can sort yourself out.

The more you stress then the higher your blood sugars will be and stress can often trigger other illnesses. It is a vicious circle and you have to break it.
Hope this helps,
Catherine.

Thank you Catherine. I know that is what I should do, and I so want to, but life is just flying by ... I don't get home from work until late, by the time I've cooked and eaten, I'm almost ready for bed, then I don't sleep ... therefore I sleep in at the weekends, and then find myself rushing around doing the things I don't have time for in the week. I am thinking of taking a week at Champneys to recharge ...

Champneys would be the ideal solution. All that pampering and not a care in the world, food placed in front of you. It would also give you time to think of solutions in how to deal with day to day stressors.
Can I come too??
Regards,
Catherine.

Hi Nanno

Similar sort of problems for me, my wife and I both work during the day then I have so sort out our children's meals when I get home. I've found my BS levels have dropped in the day just by leaving out all the worst carbohydrates. I purchase a small salad for a late breakfast/midmorning snack.
I tend to eat things like ham and cheese for lunch or celery and pate.
In the evenings I just sort out something simple like cauliflower cheese.
Not an ideal diet but my BS has dropped from 13+ to about 6 during the day and I feel better for it.
Like you, I just need to get organised more.

Don't give up, it will all slot in place for you :)

Hi Nanno

I dont think theres a person on this forum who hasnt been through what you are going through (if they havent they are very lucky!!) Try and relax-go for a short walk just to take your mind off work etc. You may find your bs is easier to control if you did a bit exercise every day- I know my bs certainly improved when I started doing just a small amount of exercise. Also your diet is very important. Have a look through some of the posts on the forum on what to eat and not to eat- it all makes a huge diference.

Good lick with it all

Nanoo ....... from your post you say you are already recording diet and BS readings. If you have been doing it for say a couple of weeks or a month say you probably have something to work from.
As you are a T2 on insulin you are probably already aware of the foods that impact on your BS, in particular Carbohydrates.

I cannot advise on insulin regimes .

Diet affects BS levels which trigger Insulin response. Very simply that is the chain unless you are T1 where you have to inject insulin. To break that chain at some point you will need to make a change ..... a small one at first. It can be whatever you like, but it is important that it is deliberate and intended.

Getting control is an intention.......... Keeping control is deliberate.

This is very general but only you can actually make it happen. I hope you can find the wherewithall to do so as it will ultimately build confidence and reassurance you need.

Take a while think about it .... then go for it

Nannoo - you are too hard on yourself, please relax, so much stress is not good for you and raises the old bg too.

Is there anything that can be done to make the job a little less stressful? Get together with your colleagues, talk about issues, I have a very stressful job too and work in a high pressure environment but we all discussed things and we came up with some good ideas to help lessen the load.

Re not having time to cook, I think this is because you find it too hard to adjust to this low carbing thing, when I read that you just grabbed a sandwich but then you felt guilty about it and of course this causes you stress because you feel that you failed.
Nannoo on really busy stressful days I havent got a chance to scratch my a**e never mind prepare lunch I just whizz into the nearest supermarket and buy something really low carb, eg cucumber/celery/cherry tomatoes and a tin of fish or salmon parcels (just sliced thin salmon filled with prawn mousse) or thinly sliced salmon filled with cream cheese and rolled up, or salmon and boursin cheese you can make up your own roll ups, you could also buy some cooked meat from the deli counter and salad leaves and a dressing (or make your own at home it will keep in your fridge for about a week or so) just make sure its not made with sugar, any of these take up no more time than buying a sandwich?

You could also shove some parsley, cucumber, tomatoes and a bit of onion into your food processor, whizz up a moment or two so everthing is just chopped up a bit but not mushy, put all in a container, season and add feta cheese, stir through and you have a very nice Shopska salad to take to work with you, its all done in less than 5 minutes.

I love my sleep ins on weekends and dont really feel like cooking much during the week, I have cooking sessions on a weekend afternoon or evening, and then freeze in portions, vegetables bakes, ratatouille, veggie mash, soups, etc all freeze really well, so you come home from work and just defrost, as simple as that. Buy lovely thick creamy greek yoghurts, I add blueberries or strawberries or chopped nuts and a bit of cinnamon and sweetener of your choice, make up a chocolate mousse (Dr Katherine has a wonderful recipe posted in here somewhere), divide into portions, it keeps around 3-4 days in the fridge.

Another thing that can save lots of time is having your food delivered, this saves you dragging yourself round the supermarket which is often stressful and frustrating.

I hope that some suggestions here give you some ideas and that you can reduce the stress in your life. Cut down on tea/coffee anything with caffeine and drink soothing herbal teas instead, at least now and then, as I said, be good to yourself

All the best
