Hi, new to all this so really unsure how to start, what to say etc. except that its comforting to find so many others that I can chat with. Im newly diagnosed, bit worried and everyone I speak to has suddenly become a diabetes expert overnight!! On tablets, for some reason gaining weight instead of losing it so highly confused as to what it is I am supposed to be eating etc - allergice to most fruits so thats more of a problem than it was so basically finding myself eating special K, dry oatcakes and salad - doing self testing as advised and readings extremely erratic. Anyway enough moaning, not usually this miserable just having strange day (feel extremely down in the dumps for some reason) but thought I would just say hello to you all.

Hi Bloated,it is very confusing to start with.Test before and two hours after meals to see how that meal is affecting your blood sugars.Get a copy of Collins Gem carb counter and look at all the things that you can eat then work out just how many carbs you are eating.Aim to reduce the portions of the starchy carbs ,they are bread ,potatoes ,pasta and rice and can seriously raise your blood sugar levels.Take it slowly, and test !!Keep a food diary for at least a week then you can look back and see what is good and what is putting up your blood sugars.

Hi bloated
weight gain is the side effect of most antidiabetic tablets. the larger the dose you use, the greater the effect. Search this forum to find ways of keeping your medication to a minimum.

hi there ive been diabetic for 41 years and i still dont know everything so just listen to your doctor or diabetic nurse, just look after yourself because i have got lots wrong with me i have 5 injections and 28 tablets per day thanks

Awww Bloated, welcome to the forum, you are just so new to all this diabetes stuff, and you have really done so well by coming to this forum, I dare say we all have felt like you do now, its all normal and just dont despair, you will learn about diabetes more and more and you will begin to understand how it all works and feel lots more confident and realise that diabetes doesnt have to control you, but it will be the other way round.

I know there is just so much information about diabetes everywhere and it can be very confusing and you end up with information overload and really freak because you really dont know what the hell to do with it all.

So start off slowly, as sugarless sue advised, get hold of that Collins Gem Carb Counter booklet, this will show you the carb content of foods and then you can start to work out which foods raise your bg by testing before you eat and 2 hours afterwards and then you can play around, food that raises bg either reduce it or cut it out altogether, this way you can devise your own eating plan, whatever works for you, the aim is to eventually achieve non diabetic glucose levels in order to be healthy and hopefully avoid complications developing. Be prepared though, its all about trial and error, but there is no need to freak about it, unless your bg really goes dramatically high, then you should seek medical advice of course.

Another thing that I would highly recommend is that you get hold initially of the excellent book by Dr Charles Clark called the Diabetes Revoluion, its easy to read and explains diabetes very well.
Then you could move on to Dr Bernsteins book but its a big book and takes much longer to read, so for now forget about it.

Read through the forum, check what other people eat andask questions all you want, everyone will try to help you and someone will have just the right answer, so dont feel all alone and depressed, we are all there with you and you will get to grips with it eventually. You cannot do it all at once, take it slowly and remember to be good to yourself. You are doing so well already simply by being willing to face up to your condition, I was not as clever as you are (you can read my story in success stories)
All the best

Just to quickly say thanks replying and nice to meet you all. Glad that its not just me that sometimes feels down - really low at the moment so think its the tabs. Will get the book mentioned and start making a diary, also only testing twice a day so will do it more until I get my head round everything. Keep being told to exercise but that in itself is a daunting thought - never really athletically built if you know what I mean - hey ho going to go and get a gym ball and mini trampoline though tomorrow see how I go with that because there is absolutely no chance of my joining a gym. Speak soon

Tilly, I am very, very sorry as you obviously had more than your fair share of problems, but you know even at this stage there is probably a whole lot that you can do to make you healthier again. I hope you dont give up hope of ever feeling better. Read through the forum, esp the success story thread, you will see how people have managed to turn their lives around, and it doesnt matter whether you are type 1 or 2, ask lots of questions and hopefully you will get some new ideas that you can try out, as long as they are safe and sensible of course. There are some real experts in the forum and everyone will be just doing their best to try and help you along.

Tell what were your readings and Hb1ac over the years and what have you been eating, I agree that we need to work with our DNs and doctors as a team, but frankly some of us have been given some really bad advice and we didnt know any better and followed their advice and instructions and it made us more and more ill, sadly doctors are not always right.

All the best Tilly

Bloated, hold on, dont invest a whole load of money in some equipment that you might never use again, you can do some very simple exercises to start off with, even while sitting down and even fidgeting and twiddling your toes counts and will help circulation, arm exercises, you can do side bends while you are sitting on a chair, play music to it or watch TV but just dont go rushing in there with major plans, you can build up your fitness gradually.

Good that you will get hold of the books, you will find them useful I guarantee it, and as you lower your bg you will find your depression will lift too, high bg can give you depression, of course, you are not feeling good, you dont know what its all about, you are probably shocked, confused, asking yourself 'why me', you will be angry and so on.

So dont force yourself doing too much.
