Hi, I'm aussie too,

Hello Johnny and welcome to the forum. Just ask if you need help with anything else.

Just to point out that the 5:2 diet and the 'Newcastle' diet are different . It's as well to know what you might be signing up for!
If it is this one then it is the 5:2 diet with VLCalories using optifast on 2 days a week followed by 5 days of eating to appetite
the control arm is a diet with a reduction of 30% calories based on your calculated calorie requirements.

Interestingly,, whilst I was trying to find out which diet was going to be trialled, I found that the hospital did it's own very low calorie meal replacement trial almost 20 years ago. (only 425 cals for 12 weeks) This was a small group of poorly controlled patients half of whom were on insulin. All the patients either came off insulin , dosage of tablets reduced considerably in those on tablets.http://www.diabetesresearchclinicalpractice.com/article/S0168-8227(97)00038-7/abstract
It would be interesting to know what became of these people.

And a big welcome too...stick with the forum and you like me will learn a lot and will become empowered.

Hi and welcome. Just to add to your confusion bear in mind that the priority for daibetics is to control the carbs rather than calories. Many diets such as the Newcastle are focussed around calories based on popular dietary understanding (some might say misunderstanding). Keeping calories down is always good but carbs are our enemy and also a major contributor to weight gain. You may well be able to avoid injections. If overweight then there is a good chance that getting down to a good BMI will avoid insulin etc.
